"Solefald” is an old norse word for "sunset”. The band forms in 1995. In 1996 they release their first 5-song demo "Jernlov”. Though this is Solefald's most traditional black metal release it already features some experimental edges like Lazare's choir vocals, piano passages or a bag pipe.

Soon the band signs with Italian label "Avantgarde Music". In 1997 they release their debut album "The Linear Scaffold”. It already features the unique avant-garde metal style typical for Solefald, ranging from rage and desperation to calm and atmospheric music. The band incorporates strange and nearly taboo techniques in the black metal scene of this time as well, using hand claps along with choruses in the song "Philosophical Revolt", jazzy clean guitar passages, and intense shrieks over lush and peaceful piano pieces.

Since 1998 Cornelius and Lazare are also well-known for their other bands and projects like Carpathian Forest, the Gothic Metal band Monumentum, Ásmegin, the progressive/folk/black metal band "Borknagar” and the avant-garde metal band "Age Of Silence”.

In 1999 the band releases their second full-length "Neonism”, incorporating black metal, pop, classical music, punk, progressive metal, and trip hop. Lazare brings back his classic choir-like vocals, but also introduces a new aggressive-slam style. The lyrics are extremely unconventional for metal in general and black metal dealing with socio-political issues and pop culture criticism.

In 2001 Solefald release their third full-length "Pills Against The Ageless Ills”, which is a concept album based on a fictitious tale and is much more guitar heavy, relying on heavy riffs and angular, colorful guitar playing.

The next Solefald endeavour "In Harmonia Universali" comes in 2003. It is by far the most epic Solefald album. Each of the 10 song's lyrics are devoted to various artists, philosophers, and deities. there are musical elements like an authentic grand piano, a male choir, authentic Spanish classical acoustic guitar, violin, and saxophone.

Later in the year 2005, the band travels to Iceland to write their next album. Originally planning to release one new album, the group winds up writing so much new material, they decide to release two new albums. The first album from this two part saga "Red For Fire” is released in 2005 and the follow up album "Black For Death” in 2006. With these albums Solefald march further into the more epic direction, leaving much of their past avant-garde experiments behind.
