In the year 1987 Hellhammer (Mayhem, Dimmu Borgir and countless other Norwegian bands) and Sverd (The Kovenant) form the Death Metal band Mortem. In 1990 they decide to broaden their style. So they change their name to Arcturus. The 7-inch "My Angel" is released the following year.

In 1994 they release "Constellation", a mini-CD meant to be distributed as a promo for the upcoming album only. Today this mini-CD is a very rare and demanded Black Metal classic. Carl August Tidemann joins the band to replace Samoth (Emperor) on guitars, and the band (together with Ulver's bass player Skoll) records their debut album "Aspera Hiems Symfonia" in 1995. The album consists of the four songs featured on the mini-CD, plus four new compositions.

In late 1996 Arcturus start the recording of their 2nd album "La Masquerade Infernale" (originally entitled "The Satanist"). This extremely innovative album is a huge success among music critics and makes Arcturus widely known and respected as avant-garde pioneers. In 1999 "Disguised Masters" comes out, containing six remixed tracks from "La Masquerade Infernale", one new track and one re-recorded track from "Aspera Hiems Symfonia". Several Norwegian artists from outside the metal scene collaborate with Arcturus for these remixes, creating some of the weirdest and most experimental material that Arcturus has released to date.

"The Sham Mirrors" is released in April 2002, pushing forward their theatrical avantgardistic performance once more. After this album singer and core member Kristoffer Rygg (aka Garm) leaves the band. With Garm Arcturus loose their charismatic front man. In 2005 their final album "Sideshow Symphonies" comes out, featuring the new singer Simen Hestnęs (Dimmu Borgir). This album goes more into the progressive metal direction. The following tour through whole Europe gets a huge success.

On 16th April 2007 Simen declares the end of Arcturus at a concert in Melbourne. The band members, most times involved in far more successful acts like Dimmu Borgir, decide to concentrate on their other projects. Arcturus pushed forward the frontiers of metal for more than 10 years and definitely belong to the most influental pioneers of avant-garde metal ever.
