Next July, experimental metallers EPHEL DUATH will return to Mana Recording Studios in St. Petersburg, Florida. Together with producer Erik Rutan (Cannibal Corpse, Goathwhore, Hate Eternal) the band will complete the recording sessions for their new album started last February, and do the final mix. Alan Douches will master the songs at his West West Side Studios, NY.
EPHEL DUATH's new album will once again feature the incredible Marco Minnemann (The Aristocrats, Kreator, Necorphagist) on drums, joined this time by his band mate Bryan Beller (The Aristocrats, Dethklok, Joe Satriani) on bass.
Featuring 8 new songs and reaching over 55 minutes of total length, EPHEL DUATH's new album is a multilayered hybrid of death metal, jazz and post rock, blended together with a strong will to experiment and with no boundaries in sight.
"I wanted this album to be a strong statement" - comments Davide Tiso. "And I believe we achieved that. Every time I put together a release for Ephel Duath, I deal with it as if it was our last. Would I be OK to let this album be the band's last shout? Yes, I definitely would. I compose music to primarily please myself; doing it puts my mind in a very specific place, a spot where I feel fitting-in much, much better than in everyday life. Playing my guitar for Ephel Duath I get the peace and the release I need to keep myself going. I'm an avid metal listener but when I play for Ephel Duath I don't feel the need to bring my music to fit any parameters, at the same time I don't put any efforts whatsoever to sound different: I just let go and navigate."
"Songs are coming out effortlessly and quicker the older I get, and I believe that with this new album I reached the highest level of intensity of my entire musical career" - continues Davide. "Lyrically the new songs dig deep in higher self subject matters, combining brutally visual imagery with a painfully honest soul searching quest."
Some of the new songs titles are: "Tracing the path of blood", "Feathers under my skin", "When mind escapes flesh".
EPHEL DUATH's new album will come out in the fall of 2013 on Agonia Records, it will be available in digital, CD and vinyl version.

Hailing from Italy and Norway, Italo-Norwegian Hard-Industrial-Electro Extreme Metallers ABORYM have announced details of their 6th full length album "Dirty", set for release on Agonia Records on the 28th May in Europe and the 11th June in the USA/North America. The album was recorded at the Fear No One Studios in Italy with Emiliano Natali, reprising his Sound Engineers role from the band’s "Psychogrotesque” album, and it is helmed by Marc Urselli of New York’s Eastside Sound Studio who has worked with the likes of MIKE PATTON and LOU REED.
The first CD of the album features new material, whilst the second CD features two re-arranged and re-recorded tracks from previous albums, covers of tracks by IRON MAIDEN, PINK FLOYD and NINE INCH NAILS, and a previously unreleased track.
Swedish black metal quartet STILLA has finally recorded its debut album "Till Stilla Falla", to be released by Nordvis on CD on 03/03/2012 and probably by some other label on vinyl as well. The record is obviously inspired by the bronze era of eerie svart metall and ominous travellers through the cold netherworlds of the Northern hinterland which fascinated through atmosphere and intensity instead of rock'n'roll cabaret. Far from automatic base flattery it seems just fair to hint at the fact that yours truly aVoid has played some really noteworthy bass lines on this hermetic recording. Too much name-dropping already? Then you needn't know that Bergraven's Pär (guitars), A from Armagedda (vocals) and Johan from De Arma (drums) crafted "Till Stilla Falla" with passion and remarkable feeling for eerie moods. Just enjoy the album's third song "Askormen"...
From the French death experimentalists Facebook page:
Debemur Morti Productions is working hard to provide new sonorous experiences, new sounds, new styles and new approaches of extreme music to a demanding public constantly looking for something NEW. And sometimes, sometimes, we find that rare and precious jewel. So, today we're extremely proud to announce the signing of the tortured entity CHAOS ECHŒS. They are visionaries, they are creators, they are a new possibility for the Dark Arts. This incredible project, which rose out of the ashes of the cult Death Metal act BLOODY SIGN, explores with an incredible talent a new generation of insane sonorities.
In order to celebrate this unholy pact, we will unleash a vinyl version of their stunning debut, the highly-regarded "Tone Of Things To Come", in the coming weeks. In the meanwhile, you can listen to "The Innermost Depths Of Knowledge" on the band's Bandcamp and buy the CD version here : http://chaosechoes.bigcartel.com/
Last but not least, CHAOS ECHŒS are actively looking for opportunities to spread their experimental poison live so if you're interested, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org

A sad message comes from the ULVER camps. Like many bands they're struggling hard with the current developments of the music scene. The music industry machinery with fat profits for managers on one side, the "everything for free” culture that even drives their close fans to illegal download platforms on the other side, hardly leaves them any financial background to keep up their art.
Instead of only lamenting about this situation, they’ve set up some cool opportunities for you to support ULVER’s art, including apps for Apple and Android. Read more about it here:
The big EINDHOVEN METAL MEETING caters for all tastes and it must be said, has always had a good eye for what is brewing in the unhealthy underground extreme metal pot. This year, aside the usual barrage of big names (My Dying Bride, Satyricon, Dark Tranquillity - only EU show, Obituary, Sodom, Brujeria, etc.) and the fantastic The 11th Hour flying the flag for soul-stirring Dutch doom, three bands are well worth checking out from the broader AGM eagle-eye view point: Belgian madmen ENTHRONED, and French twisted nutters BLACKLODGE and SAILLE.
Besides, Holland and Eindhoven are always a great excuse for a good weekend break. And sometimes exposure to the straigh-forward vibes of old school death metal/thrash is just what the doctor orders against acute cases of elitism! ;-)
See you there!!!
The prestigious German pagan metal festival will celebrate its 10th anniversary on 5th/6th April 2013.
Since its inception the event has maintained its uncompromising underground spirit, therefore AGM wishes to congratulate Ivo and his team for the effort and success so far, raising its collective drinking vessel to another 10 years of good work for and within the underground! Naturally, Mystery Flame will join the ale-fuelled celebrations by attending the two days of splendid Ragnaröking music conjured up for this special 2013 edition.
The line up so far comprises some lip-licking acts such as, to name but few: AGRYPNIE, AVA INFERI, CARPATHIAN FOREST, DORNENREICH (their only metal show for 2013!), EÏS, ELUVEITIE (headliners), FJOERGYN, HELRUNAR, MENHIR, NOCTE OBDUCTA, SECRETS OF THE MOON, SHINING (SWE), VREID and many more.
After many years from their last live appearances ABORYM is proud to officially announce their collaboration with THE FLAMING ARTS booking agency. Aborym will perform live again in 2013 and they signed an exclusive worldwide contract. Aborym will treat their generations of fans in a must-see, heart-pumping, eye-poppin’digital, multimedia and multisensory live shows.
For anyone in the neighborhood of south Norway, this might be interesting - it's an exhibition curated by none other than Cornelius Jakhelln of SOLEFALD etc, and one of the invited speakers is the AGM.com contributor Dominik Irtenkauf.
GEWALTKUNSTWERK, OR THE VIOLENT WORK OF ART
The 3rd Regiment Berlin, a part of the Art Militia, will occupy Kristiansand Kunsthall from November 24th through December 31st 2012. The exhibition is called "GewaltKunstWerk" (translated from the German, "the violent work of art"), and aims at being an exploration of the peace-buidling potential of artistic production. In a time where questions pertaining to security and censorship are as pressing as ever, art and its workers (or soldiers, to state it in the Art Militia jargon) have the possibility to comment freely and differently on how our societies are organised and run. Thus, is it possible to conceive of a peace-building operation using the gallery space as its battlefield? Can an aesthetics developed by violent systems strengthen art's potential as a nonviolent alternative?
GewaltKunstWerk will feature painting, performance, poster art, video, sculpture, installation, concert and literary production and performance. The 3rd Regiment is a uniformed collective crossing totalitarian aesthetics with artistic production.
The exhibition is curated by Cornelius Jakhelln, with support from NBK/The Union of Norwegian Artists. Organiser: Kristiansand Kunsthall/Cecilie Nissen.
The exhibition is accompanied by a seminar on the topic "Musical Extremism".
This will be the first Third Rebel seminar in Kristiansand on December 1st, 2012. The seminar will take place in Kristiansand Kunsthall, located in the very centre of town. The seminar will take place in the afternoon, roughly from midday to 5 PM.
Invited key speakers:
- Avi Pitchon
- Gunnar Sauermann
- Dominik Irtenkauf
- Valnoir Mortasonge
The seminar will be open to the public, but will take place in English and be a summary of two years of discussions and exchange on the Third Rebel list. There will be presentations of around 30-40 minutes each.
The day before there will be a seminar taking place in Norwegian called: "Musical Extremism: Antisemitism, Nazism and Terror in Neofolk, Industrial and Black Metal." The Third Rebel speakers may also latch on to that topic (a very large one in deed), thus making the Saturday sitting a continuation of the Friday seminar.
Ordskifte who specializes in organizing debates in Norway, plans to set up a panel discussion in English language on December 1st in Kristiansand and maybe some days earlier in Oslo. See link: http://ordskifte.wordpress.com/ (only in Norwegian!)
"To coincide with the upcoming European tour during the first half of December (with Vulture Industries, Krakow and Mondvolland), Virus are releasing a new CD as well as a whole new line of merchandise.

Four new shirt designs have also been made, with the help of renowned Romanian artist Costin Chioreanu (Aura Noir, Roadburn festival etc.), and all can be preordered now, along with the CD from Virus' newly opened webstore: http://virulentmusic.bigcartel.com/
Virus' 2008 album, The Black Flux will also be available on gatefold vinyl around the same time, and can be preordered from the same location.

From the ABIGOR facebook page, posted 11/10-12 at 10 pm:
"PK, guitarist and 2nd mastermind deceided to leave ABIGOR because of various reasons.
There might be a new band facing the dawn soon, maybe not, time will tell...
There won't be more information, nor an official statement."
The 6th full-length album from progressive/avant-garde metal band EPHEL DUATH will be released in spring 2013 via Agonia Records. Album title as well as album art have been set and will be revealed later this year.
The follow up to On Death and Cosmos (EP, 2012) will introduce a line-up change in the rhythmic section. All bass parts have already been recorded by Bryan Beller (Mike Keneally, Steve Vai, Dethklok, The Aristocrats, James La Brie, Dweezil Zappa) in replacement of Steve Di Giorgio. Marco Minnemann returns playing drums for EPHEL DUATH bringing the creative relationship between drums and guitars to a dynamism never reached before by the band.
The album itself can easily be described as a new mountain-sized challenge in EPHEL DUATH's career, that Davide Tiso (founder/guitarist) - along with the support of vocalist Karyn Crisis - is taking step by step in order to reach the zenith. Ephel Duath's new album is the musical statement I wish this band will be remembered for - comments Davide. All I've learned or not learned musically, all I've always wanted my lyrics to be, live and breathe in these eight new songs. This album holds together all that Ephel Duath's music has touched in the last fifteen years and pushes its boundaries even further. I feel that a whole new expressive world is opening up to me and this band. My intent is to blindly follow this recent path and to bring Ephel Duath to higher and higher levels of intensity, riff after riff, song after song, with patience and obstinacy, an open heart and dedication.
In January EPHEL DUATH will enter Mana Recording Studios is St. Petersburg, Florida with producer Erik Rutan to record guitars and vocals and to mix the album.
At the moment the band is busy putting the last touches on what will be the final guitars and vocals tracks.
Our old comrade & contributor known as Polygon, has just released a 7" on USBM label Debemur Morti. Hark!
We're proud to announce the signing of doomed ensemble PORTA NIGRA. Paying tribute to a godless and decadent generation, the German outfit operates with a rather unusual approach and offers truly demented Dark Metal. Guitarist Gilles de Rais comments :
"We are pretty much inspired by those artists of the so called 'Fin de Siècle', as we feel those spirits experienced similar feelings like we do. For them, with the rising mechanisation and industrialisation an era came to an end and they responded their way just like we respond to the decay of our time and generation.
We celebrate this downfall and welcome everybody to join us."
With depraved full-length debut "Fin de Siècle" imminent, PORTA NIGRA presents its first official offering – "Megalomaniac" - in the ancient, timeless 7” EP format. Containing one album track back-to-back with an exclusive song – "Nero" – this analogue introduction is ideal for PORTA NIGRA, whose essence is of a different time and place. Artwork was conceived by French artist Valnoir Mortasonge from Metastazis. The gentlemen who avail of the pre-order option (eitrin.com) will qualify for free postage worldwide.
"Autonomy", Kekal’s anticipated 9th full-length album will be officially released on CD and digital formats between September and October 2012 (exact release dates will vary on each region, and yet to be determined) by Whirlwind Records, an independent record label based in Germany who also previously released another two Kekal albums "The Habit of Fire" (2007) and "8" (2010).
"It is said that great art has the power to take us outside of ourselves and bring us closer to ourselves simultaneously. Few bands have accomplished this rare feat on a more profound and consistent basis than NEUROSIS. For nearly three decades, their music has touched the hearts and minds of young men and women seeking contact with something beyond the physical world, something intangible, something that expresses the inner tumult of the human condition in a way that transcends time and space. Something that not only provokes questions but maybe even hints at answers.
Since 1985 this matchless force has surpassed the boundaries of any genre, never ceasing to mutate and progress their songwriting and sonic delivery, and never failing to mesmerize audiences both in the studio and onstage. And as the anticipation from their diehard fanbase reaches a boiling point, this week NEUROSIS unveil the title of their eleventh full-length studio creation, which will manifest itself as Honor Found In Decay.
The follow-up to their acclaimed 2007-released Given To The Rising album, the music on Honor Found In Decay is both torturous and transcendent. It is the ongoing exposition of a vast internal dialogue that seems to carry the weight of eons. With the right kind of ears and eyes, it can seem like the trials and tribulations of mankind are being channeled through five individuals: Steve Von Till, Scott Kelly, Noah Landis, Jason Roeder and Dave Edwardson. And yet? They will be the first ones to tell you that they are just regular people trying to make sense of the world around them. Aided by Josh Graham, their resident visual guru, they transmit their interpretations through multiple sensory planes. The degree to which Neurosis allows them to step out of their everyday lives is the distance between one and zero, the distance between thinking and doing, the distance between this minute and the one that may or may not follow. Which is to say: NEUROSIS takes them outside of themselves and brings them closer to themselves. Simultaneously.
This next chapter in the evolution of NEUROSIS will see worldwide release through the band’s own Neurot Recordings this Autumn. In Germany, Austria & Switzerland October 26th, in the UK October 29th, and in North America on October 30th.
Further details on Honor Found In Decay will be made available over the coming weeks.
Scott Kelly – vocals/guitars
Steve Von Till – vocals/guitars
Dave Edwardson – bass
Jason Roeder – drums
Noah Landis – keyboards
Josh Graham – visual effects, art
So now that childhood has ended, what should the Wolves do now? How about... working with a symphonic orchestra? We have little more news than this: this autumn, on September 21 it seems, in Tromsö in northern Norway, ULVER will hook up with Tromsö chamber orchestra. The boys are composing new music for this event.
Scandinavian readers may find more info here. We'll get back to you on this.
Finally the first teaser of A FOREST OF STARS' sensational new video (which will be relased on June 29th) has been made public! "Gatherer of the Pure" is a magnificent track from the upcoming album "A Shadowplay For Yesterdays", which will be released on July 20th via Lupus Lounge / Prophecy Productions.
"ABORYM will enter the studio in October to record their sixth album, the follow-up to Psychogrotesque. The new album will be released in early 2013 through Agonia Records. Title, track-list, guests and tons of important details about the new release will be revealed soon.
The band is also working on a special song in order to celebrate the anniversary of the first 20 years of the band's career, an assembly of riffs, ideas, lyrics, loops, grooves sent by fans. Furthermore, a big fan-wall poster is under construction, with hundreds of photos from the fans. You’ll find all the infos and restrictions on sending audio and visual material inside the fan area section on www.aborym.it
Again some sad news. Steeve Hurdle, guitarist extraordinaire who was part of creating the legendary Obscura album when working with GORGUTS, passed away last week, at age 41. Metal-Archives.com has it that post-surgical complications took his life. After leaving GORGUTS, he began working with NEGATIVA, whose only release, a self-titled EP from 2006, was a continuation of the outlandish chaos that Hurdle created with GORGUTS.
It seems like Trond Båthen, also known as Trondr Nefas, has passed away, for reasons as yet unknown. Båthen was the vocalist and guitarist of various bands and projects, from the grimmest URGEHAL, VULTURE LORD and BEASTCRAFT, to more progressive and exploratory constellations such as IN LINGUA MORTUA, ANGST SKVADRON and most of all the legendary KVIST.
""Drought” has the sour taste of the inexorable; it is a musical journey through the last moments before disaster hits. This recording displays some of the most lethal song writing ever witnessed from the band while retaining their unmistakable sound."
"It is with such happiness and pride that we are finally able to reveal the title of the next Ephel Duath EP: On Death and Cosmos. These words perfectly summarize what the EP is about and choosing the title has been a no-brainer. The main lyrics line is about death and abandonment, loss and self-transforming will: a dive into the darkness, that can reveal a new birth in light.
Release dates have been set as June 21 in Europe and August 14 in the United States.
On Death and Cosmos is a 20 minute mini concept EP that develops through three songs: Black Prism, Raqia and Stardust Rain, creating some of the most intense and mournful music Ephel Duath has ever offered."
Happy hippos from New York will come on tour through Europe together ILL. Whereas the latter ones are probably spreading sickness among the audience, JOLLY are self-proclaimed experts in happiness, happy music and happy neuro-science. JOLLY's latest release, The Audio Guide to Happiness (Part 1), is said to be "a self-reflective sonic journey scientifically tailored to guide the listener through the strata of his/her own emotional make-up. The listener is subjected to musical mood dynamics and key lyrical triggers while the brain is fed corresponding binaural tones. These tones are carefully and deliberately interwoven within the music to support all appropriate peaks and valleys throughout the experience. Through extensive research and surveys from over 5,000 subjects, JOLLY has combined the art of musical production with sociological and neurological data, packaging it all into one cohesive system comprised of four phases. The first two phases make up part 1 of The Audio Guide to Happiness." Happy songs for happy people? Find out yourself when JOLLY hit the stage!

"Autonomy" is Kekal's ninth full-length album, and it also marks as the second one being recorded without the presence of official band members. The music on "Autonomy" can be best described as emotionally adventurous and introspective in nature. As dark as it is illuminating, this album will definitely challenge listeners to free themselves from seeing music as a mere entertainment commodity. Simplicity takes the most important role on the album, as it values the most basic and primordial drive to balance life's complexities.
SotM frontman sG on "Nyx": "This is the very first Secrets Of The Moon video clip. In its total length the song is about 11 minutes long. We had to cut almost half of it to make it more comfortable for everyone. However, you still get a decent impression of it. Parts of the lyrics are taken from the 'Liber Cordis Cincti Serpente' - an account of the relations of the aspirant and his holy guardian angel. Now, enjoy!"
Norwegian psych-BM crazydoomers FURZE have signed for the vinyl mongers over at the Fysisk Format label. Here's what they said over at http://www.fysiskformat.no:
"We are proud to announce the signing of the norwegian Black Psych Metal act FURZE!
Fysisk Format will release the 5th Furze album worldwide on May 11th. On vinyl and CD of course, as well as the multitude of lesser formats in the digital domain.
The album is entitled Psych Minus Space Control and is 90% instrumental. Artwork by Sami Albert Hynninen of Reverend Bizarre. In the words of Furze’s Woe J. Reaper:
"The idea is to present the psyche atmospheres and try to have the soul touched from there, via emotions. Or vica verca, make the soul come forth from occult places, summoned up by strong feelings.”
More info and tasters of the album to come!
We hereby command you all to and consume the four previous Furze albums in preparation to the release of their Masterpiece, their FIFTH!
Preorders for the CD and VINYL are up on www.tigernet.no"
AOL Music is streaming In Nomine Odium, the third full-length offering from French black metal miscreants HAEMOTH in its entirety. In Nomine Odium is one of the most terrifying releases of late and comes by way of infamous Debemur Morti Productions (home of Blut Aus Nord amongst others).
"Following six years of unsettled silence, HAEMOTH return with seven singeing psalms of uncompromising Satanik supplication. Corrupted by the glorious, bountiful presence of all-knowing evil - vice and deviance their predominant muse(s) – the hateful hellmongers channel pestilence, corruption and occult rituals into their most scathing and relentless concoction yet. In Nomine Odium is a caustic, toxic and breathtaking excursion into the darkest corridors of the human psyche, where even the more ambient passages are dark, menacing and deeply disturbing".
LES DISCRETS launch the new video of Ariettes Oubliées, the track that gives the name to the album to be released on 10th February 2012 on Prophecy Productions. The track features lyrics by symbolist French poet Paul Verlaine.
The video was directed by Audrey HADORN, with camera work by François-Marc BAILLET and was edited by Fursy TEYSSIER & Audrey HADORN.
LES DISCRETS are on tour with Alcest & Soror Dolorosa in February 2012.
From the VIRUS facebook channel:
"Some viral news for y'all. A compilation of sorts is in the works. We have some rare and unreleased stuff that didn't fit on the albums that, combined with some live tracks will make up a full-length release sometime this year, on cd and vinyl. More details later:)"

Upon listening to ALCEST’s upcoming album, "Les voyages de l'Âme”, Mystery Flame’s soul transmigrates back in time... Give her time to float back in front of her PC and you might well have the very first review of Neige’s much awaited third album here on AGM soon, very soon… Stay tuned!
But in the meantime… In those bleak moments when life seems overwhelmingly devoid of meaning we should remind ourselves that the great rollercoaster-like journey of our soul is in itself an experience worth having. Here is the universal story of a young girl whose mysterious life cycle ineluctably embraces Alcest’s angelic music.
Once upon a time, in the early Nineties, from a small black and white house in the heart of rainy Britain, a little wide-eyed girl called Little Dreamer imagined the unthinkable: coupling extreme metal and spirituality, two apparently opposite sides that made her what she was. Having an experienced group of musicians right there at her disposal, she called the band Celestial. Deeply inspired lyrics were flowing and splendid artwork was created: a vivid, otherworldly landscape dotted in diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds. Brutal and progressive, the music came along quite naturally too. An album was professionally recorded in a known studio, its prophetic title was to be "Saviour Nature”. Breathlessly technical, it juxtaposed death metal harshness to King Crimson oddness, devastating pace to jazz-fusion twists and bends; Tibetan esoteric samples and dreamy, whispered female spoken parts dotted amongst impressive guttural vocals, completed the offering. It was strange, eclectic, startling… and of course, like anything a little ahead of its times, not understood. Possibly, not even by its own creators.
The reckless underground label who had taken Celestial under contract began to panic and tried to off-load this oddly-named (remember, we are talking early 90s death metal!), weird-sounding product to the bigger labels (the well-known names involved were a possible selling-point). They all scratched their heads and said sorry. So the ambitious label quickly sank into the depths of hell, taking the master of Celestial’s album down with them. After months of passionate work, the band was left with just a raw cassette tape in their hands, dreams vanished into nothingness: Little Dreamer and her fragile guitarist love, broken-hearted, consigned Celestial to the spiritual planes for eternity.
Then one day, many years after, Alcest (with a small handful of other bands) came along: at peace with the great cycles of life, the little girl’s dream was joyfully and fully vindicated while she entered at will the several portals to transcendence embedded in Neige’s work. More than a few of these portals are present in Alcest’s upcoming album, via 8 songs which keep mapping the manifold Journeys of the Soul. Little Dreamer’s spirit quivered when she head the glorious "Beings of Light”, recollecting a bunch of words she wrote in 1994 for a fellow soul-explorer:
I long to be with some Celestial Beings
To adore in silence those blissful friends
Gliding into the constellations of their smiles
Melting into their shining eyes
I long to be at the feet of Celestial Artists
Living this revelation with magnified devotion…
Time shifted along, but ever so imperceptibly for the Little Dreamer’s soul. Sonically, the abyssal thunder of death metal gradually morphed into the rapturous majesty of black metal, but the same child-like dream keeps nurturing the heart. What has dramatically changed is that today she is sharing her thirst for the transcendental (a term not to be confused with religion!) with far more people than ever before: isn’t life strange and wondrous?!!... Older and wiser, she knows there is a celestial being in all of us. Celestial is indeed the fathomless depth of the Universe in the purest and widest of its esoteric meaning: purity of love, true depth of primordial emotion, boundless child-like happiness, full-immersion within the arms of nature, the conscience-shifting pull of silence and the blissful sound of absolute chaos all concur in creating the powerful undercurrent that can light up the celestial vault inside us, scattering incredible pearlescent colors over the real world, as if our eyes dispersed light through an in-built glass prism. "Beings of Light” is now playing once again, completing another magic cycle… Let… Your… Self… Go…
The third edition of MADRID IS THE DARK is about to kick off on 9th and 10th December in the Spanish capital. A change of venue to accomodate an even larger crowd and a fantastic line-up are auspicious for yet another success for a festival that has worked hard to achieve a solid blend of quality and originality.
AGM's Mystery Flame, who already covered MITD II last year, will attend again, eager to soak in the multifaceted nuances of this congregation mainly dedicated to Doom, but open to all underground metal genres.
Enslaved and Katatonia will headline, while Primordial, Morgoth, Ghost Brigade, Asphyx, Daylight Dies, October Tide, Skepticism, Ahab, Mar de Grises, 40 Watt Sun, Isole, Ereb Altor, As Light Dies and Ophis will offer an intense schedule for all!
There has been a close friendship and a deep artistic bond between Alcest and Les Discrets since the very beginning. With both bands releasing their respective new albums in early 2012 (via Prophecy Productions, of course), an ensuing joint tour is not just a logical step for the musicians, but also an ideal combination in the eyes of many fans. The journey of Alcest and Les Discrets throughout Europe will see 17 performances in twelve countries, and they will be supported by Soror Dolorosa, the Gothic Rock band of Andy Julia, the regular photographer of both Alcest and Les Discrets.

"We confirm the rumours about coming back to life as a real band. We ended up putting together all the riffs and soundscapes we managed to gather during all those fuckin' years. Now, when we have the vision of this yet unborn bastard, we may say the new album is going to be something you would never expect from us!"
After a week of working 12 hours a day, the choir book with the notation for the Dol Ammad recordings is complete, printed and binded!
The book contains all the choir phrases for the "Hyperspeed” album and it is split into the 4 choral voices: Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass.
On the night of the 9th September, Jonas Bergqvist a.k.a. 'B', founding member, main composer, and guitarist of Lifelover, died unexpectedly. The cause of his death is still unclear and has yet to be established.
The message of Jonas's passing came as a surprise to the Prophecy team. Hence, we lack the appropriate words for this tragic event. To us, Jonas wasn't just a very creative artist, but also a pleasant and enthusiastic person. It is for certain that we won't be the only ones missing his character, his passion, and his unique musical language.
In the face of this tragic loss, we would very much like to extend our heartfelt condolence towards Jonas's family, his friends, and the remaining musicians of Lifelover.
"Season of Mist is proud to announce the signing of Avant-garde Metal band THY CATAFALQUE! The Hungarian duo has already released four albums of an ever-evolving, experimental, dark yet lush music.
Vocalist / guitarist Tamás Kátai issued the following statement: 'A real honour it is to work with one of the finest labels of our scene and thus to share a roster with such massive and legendary names. It's an honest pleasure to represent Hungary here.'"
Austrian avant-garde metal legends KorovaKill reveal more information about their forthcoming comeback album:
"Chryst PhantasmaChronica” is a concept album that consists of only one song with the length of 50 minutes. It unveils the chronicle behind the phantasms of the visible world, which has become chronic. "PhantasmaChronica” is wilder and calmer, more chaotic and more atmospheric, more brutal and more sentimental, straighter and more complex than all other KorovaKill albums. Prepare for a masterpiece of "Epic Psychedelic Metal”!
Mastermind Chrystof proclaims: "And by the seventh day the creation was completeth. Now the creator will rest from all the work He hath made. He pupates in a cocoon and will return as a new creature with a new world. Await his coming…”
"Chryst PhantasmaChronica” will be released in September 2011.

Just received this from Keith Utech of Utech Records; artist Stephen Kasner whose wonderful art you may recognize from releases by ALUK TODOLO, KHLYST, Runhild Gammelsaeter's AMPLICON, SKULLFLOWER, et c, has become seriously ill. From the mail:
"To date I haven't said anything publicly about Stephen Kasner out of respect
for his privacy. He has issued a statement and I wanted to share it.
Stephen Kasner has recently been diagnosed with some serious medical
issues. Like many artists who lack the benefit of medical insurance, he
pushed the situation aside until it became unavoidable. Emergency care has
been initiated, but he is not out of the woods yet, and his continued care
is extremely necessary - hence this call for aid to friends, admirers of his
art, and comrades alike."

2011 is coming up strong... ULVER recently revealed the title of their upcoming album, following 2007's Shadows of the Sun.: Critical Geography.
Quoth the official spokesperson of the wolves:
"Ok, so now we have been on the road, and it has been rewarding, all fear and loathing considered. We are a domestic pack these days. The children miss their parents and we miss them. So. We have decided to limit next year's touring to two shorter blocks, one before and one after summer, plus an odd festival here and there. We would also very much like to make a few apperances overseas.
2011 is the future, a Critical Geography, the new album of Ulver. The anthological presentation we've been hiding behind since Lillehammer is history after Warsaw.

The new album from Norway's weirdest blackclad squadron FURZE has been revealed, supposedly titled ’Reaper Subconscious Guide’, supposedly to be released through Agonia in November this year. Quoth the Reaper:
”All music and lyrics are written and performed by Reaper. Recorded and mixed in Silver Tone Studio the 100% analogue way on high quality equipment from the late 40’s to the late 70’s(mainly 60s/70s equipment). Reaper plays the trad. Instruments Drums, Guitar, Bass and Vocals as well as the ghastly Glockenspiel thru the album… The lyrics deal with the subconscious aspects. Death contributes as to the condition of the Individualist, religionist or the human mind(s). Not to forget it’s results….The lyrics puts in perspective; these results, so to say...
This album is dedicated to the memory of the ‘70-‘75 era of Black Sabbath. - without whose existence - the dark Masterflame of Metal would no Reality see …
NOTE: this is not a tribute album but its our sincere 40th anniversary birthday card (since their debut LP) to the band which we feel added THE best to the rock and metal scene....also to Furze. It was no coincidence that we covered ”Electric Funeral” in 1998 on our 2nd demo ya’ know... Fanatic fans we may be but that doesn’t subtract from the lyrical and musical originality we’re Urged to write. As blues influenced Sabbath - Sabbath influenced Furze; needless to say, Furze are not even near the immense writing power of Geezer/Iommi/Ward... The lyrical content of Sabbath had/have a far weaker influence on us though. - After all, its not about mathematics, well, at that time its about having had a good listen to The Reaper! PolyTriad Fingerprints ? You bet....
This album is foremost a new dimension. This is the start-album on the Focus on SOUND/production for Furze! The idea is to really get all the atmosphere delivered, get it all to really fit and raise each song’s potential.
The flow, the production, everything was better planned this time; yet some troubles were popping up of course and craved it’s bonus work. I’m really proud of the album and I hope you will experience something out of it - I surely did! Comments Zeckra aka Woe J Reaper.
Norwegian flying-carrot-skydrifter fellows VIRUS have posted the following update in their myspace blog to feed our new-lineup-related curiosity:
After Plenum's untimely departure, we've been searching far and wide for someone to fill in on bass for the upcoming album The Agent That Shapes The Desert.
We discovered the answer to our prayers in our backyard so to speak. His name is Bjeima, he is a multi-talented artist residing in Oslo, who's got/is involved with tons of interesting projects out and on the way, like Yurei, Delirium Bound, Konstriktor, The Ghost Conspiracy and M to name a few, be sure to check them all out here on Myspace.
We announce the upcomming release of "A Parallel Zoetrope", a 7' split between Aenaon and Satanochio. This split will be released in 500 copies worldwide from Floga Records and Orkestral Promenade Productions.
The Aenaon song will be called "I, Tyrant". The Satanochio side is coming with the song "Crimson Grim". Both songs are placed in the avantgarde and experimental dimensions of black metal.
The artwork of this release is done from Costin Chioreanu (www.myspace.com/twilight13media), an artist well known from works with bands like Decrepit Spectre, Ulver, Aura Noir, Grave etc.
The mastering of the Aenaon song, took place at Strype Audio in Norway. The well-known studio from the works of bands such as Code, DHG, Ihsahn, Darkthrone, Emperor, Arcturus, Virus, 1349, Keep of Kalessin etc. Engineered by Tom Kvalsvoll.
First release: vinyl version of CODE's recent masterpiece Resplendent Grotesque (according to most of us, best album of 2009). Limited and going FAST, so act now! Visit here.
Haintic (definition) – (hayn-tik) – One who exhibits ghostlike qualities
Haintic has been created to bridge the gap between performer and listener. Created by Aort of CODE, the goal is to provide high quality and unique releases from within our extended family of artists. We will only be releasing titles in limited numbers (500 maximum) to maintain exclusivity and desirability and great attention will always be paid to artwork, packaging and special features.
We understand that as collectors ourselves, unique packaging and a hand crafted touch is important to creating products that not only are desirable, but also reflect the energy and dedication that has gone into the music itself. By doing this we intend to ensure that every aspect of each product supports the ethos and spirit of the music itself.
Noticed on the IntraWeb recently, that might get the juices flowing for the AGM fangirls, boys and goats.
1. (though this is pretty dated now,) beardfaced piglet enthusiast Svein-Egil Hatlevik (I won't bother introducing him) has joined French avantmongers STAGNANT WATERS as their lead vocalist. The band, run by SMOHALLA/etc fellow Camille Giraudeau, are working on their debut album, featuring among other Kim Sölve as guest lyricist. Here a premix here, sounds like it's gonna get weird(er)...
2. Seems Vicotnik is restoring a full line-up for DHG: according to the info at metal-archives.com, 2010 has seen the joining of NIDINGR/GRAVFERD guitarist Blargh (sic), and the drummer Terghl, filling the vacuum left by Thrawn and D'Arn respectively. Since Yusuf promised me personally in October 2009 that the new DHG album would be out within two years, this subtle move looks promising: there seems to be a definite future for DHG as a live band. Myspace.
3. Plenum, a.k.a Petter Berntsen, is no longer a part of VIRUS, and there has been no official statement as to whether a bass-replacement has been found to reestablish the trinity with Czral and Einz. The vocal recordings have been finished, and the cover will be realised by Eliran Kantor, who has done some hysterically stunningartwork for ANSUR, TO-MERA and SIGH, et c. Oh, and the title of the album has been revealed as well: The Agent That Shapes The Desert Sweet.
Rather surprisingly, there has been a resurgence of activity at the Jester Records HQ in Oslo (perhaps not that surprisingly come to think of it, considering the emergence of ULVER into public activity the past year). As if it wasn't enough that pigs learned how to fly and ULVER became a live band, now that unruly Jester-Trickster has proved that the forecast predicts frostbite in Hell by releasing a Black Metal album!
NIDINGR is back after a 5 year hiatus, with Wolf-father, a theme-album based on Norse mythology. NIDINGR already enjoys an elevated status among the connoisseurs up here, and this new release will solidify all of that and more. Nidingr's main man is Teloch whose many undertakings include GORGOROTH, 1349, UMORAL, OV HELL etc. Just you wait.
It has Hellhammer on drums, guest appearance from Garm, a misty forest lake and a wolfsangel on the cover. Feels like 1996 all over again.
More traditionally Jesterish - that is, not traditional at all - is the upcoming collaboration release of Norwegian pigdaddy ZWEIZZ and the sadly departed JOEY HOPKINS. Quoth the beardman:
I am happy to announce that the first and only album by Zweizz & Joey Hopkins will be released through Jester Records in 2010.
I met Joey Hopkins through the social networking site Myspace. We initiated a cooperation in 2007 that lasted until Joey’s untimely death in December 2008.
By then we had made eleven song sketches. I only spoke with him on the telephone once, and we were discussing meeting IRL, but somehow we didn’t feel like there was any hurry. Then suddenly he was gone.
I have tried to make an abum that both his mother and the rest of his family can remember him by – as well as being a statement that lives up to my somewhat idiosyncratic artistic standards. And of course, I can just assume that Joey would have approved of the songs in their respective final states. It can be difficult to kill the darlings of a friend who has already went onwards.
I hope I have succeeded in making this an album that he would have liked, and I want to share this music with as many people as possible to celebrate the memory of the immense talent of Joey Hopkins. It has been an honour to work with you.
Some words to describe the musick: Electronic, hectic like a can of worms, some pop surfaces, distorted, melodic most of the time, some black metal influences, some IDM influences. IT'S LIKE A GOLEM.

After searching the darkest corners of Oslo for a suitable location for the exhibition, they finally settled on the former location of the legendary record shop HELVETE, known for its pivotal role in the earliest ages of Norwegian Black Metal.
"No iconic album without iconic cover art. Trine and Kim seem to deliver these brilliant pieces time and again. We definitely shall meet, and part, and meet again: Where dead men meet, on the lips of living men.”
Munkeby, SHINING (NOR)
"One can sum up the work of Trine and Kim in one word: craftsmanship. Be it logos, illustration or photography, the master hand is just as steady. With Norwegian Black Metal as their aesthetic point of departure, Trine and Kim have drawn, etched, painted and engraved their way across multiple genres and art forms."
Cornelius Jakhelln, SOLEFALD
"Enkelt og greit: Trine og Kim er de flinkeste designerene jeg kjenner. Jeg har jobbet med dem i noe sånt som ti år, siden de snubla nyforelsket ut fra et eller annet grafisk institutt, og jeg tipper det blir et decade til. Jeg liker Trine og Kim som mennesker, de er bra folk, og de har en særlig god intuisjon når det gjelder å gi form (gjerne vektorisert) til mine høytflyvende innskytelser. Out of the blue. In the red. Det er bærre lækkert."
Kristoffer Rygg, ULVER og Jester Records
"It was great to collaborate with Trine and Kim. We gave them a pretty challenging task for the last Mayhem record called "Ordo Ad Chao". (...) It become a success and we could use some elements of the artwork even for the live performances later. Thank you guys and hails from Mayhem!"
Attila Csihar, MAYHEM
"(...)On my journey towards this designer duo I had an epiphany when I realised how many of their album designs had impressed me without really noticing who stood behind them. (...) If we get to have it our way this is only the beginning..."
Ivar S. Peersen, ENSLAVED and TRINACRIA
Some Blabbermouth updates on our favourite recently resurrected French Canadian death metallers, GORGUTS!
"Guitarist/vocalist Luc Lemay of the reactivated Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada-based technical death metal band GORGUTS has released the following statement to BLABBERMOUTH.NET:
"It's been almost a year since I wrote the last update for the upcoming GORGUTS record. First, I want to thank everyone that took the time to write us after I posted the rehearsal video with John [Longstreth, drums; DIM MAK, ORIGIN, THE RED CHORD, SKINLESS, POSSESSION, ANGELCORPSE] and I… I can't thank you enough for all the support and enthusiasm towards the band. Since then we've been very busy and productive working on the new record!! We got two-thirds of the music written and recorded into two pre-productions.
"I couldn't be happier with the result of this collaboration along with three of the most talented musicians in the metal scene. John, Colin [Marston, bass; DYSRHYTHMIA, BEHOLD... THE ARCTOPUS, BYLA, KRALLICE, INDRICOTHERE] and Kevin [Hufnagel, guitar; DYSRHYTHMIA, WHILE HEAVEN WEPT, BYLA, EUCLID STREET, THE FIFTH SEASON, GREY DIVISION BLUE] have been fantastic and amazingly creative with their instruments for the new compositions.
"Don't expect this record to sound like a previous GORGUTS album. We've also been very busy getting ready with the setlist for the upcoming show for Maryland Deathfest. It's so cool re-visit the first four album material and we'll be performing live, for the first time, some of the songs for our upcoming album!!!!
"So, here's a preview of the atmosphere you can expect on the album which we'll be recording later this year! Thanks again to all our fans!! See you on stage!!"
Go HERE to hear a streamed demo preview of their new material!
The second Pensees Nocturnes album, "Grotesque" will be released next March 27 on LADLO Productions. A radical change but a mixture just as incongruous as proved by the two tracks posted on the band's myspace: http://www.myspace.com/penseesnocturnes
The second Nightpray album will be released on 15/03/2010 by Asiluum internet label, after 2 years from the highly rated debut "Five Hours Before And Sometimes After". The new album is entitled "Dreamocracy" and it supposed to be another piece of dramatic madness on the shores of avantgarde/post black metal land. Mr.Clandestine (Dodheimsgard) is now a full-time member of Nightpray and all the bass parts were recorded by him, back in Norway. Another notable collaboration regarding this album is the one with Mr.S, the leader of the strange Romanian group Satanochio. He done all the vocals and also the second guitar for this record.
KKOAGULAA are excited to announce the signing of a deal with Aural Music. KKOAGULAA, the multimedia, multidimensional project formed by ccernn after his departure from Manes, have wrapped up production on their debut full length. The album, titled Aurum Nostrum Non Est Aurum Vulgi, marks a new era of an exponential growth of creativity for the artists involved.
The inception of KKOAGULAA continues and furthers the pushing of boundaries that characterized the black metal/avant-garde careers of its core members, KKOAGULAAs art is a kaleidoscopic vortex of dark and light, brilliant, psychedelic colour contrasting haunting, evocative monochrome. Much discussion and speculation surrounds the KKOAGULAA podcasts, ebooks and art. The period of conception and gearing up yielded hours of material, but that material were but the rough sketches, the single and debut album comprising the first masterworks of KKOAGULAA.
Aurum Nostrum Non Est Aurum Vulgi is set to be released in late February 2010 and will be preceded by a digital only EP in late january 2010.

NEW ALBUM - 18th January 2010
ABIGOR "Time is the Sulphur in the Veins of the Saint”

Hence man can be merged in His infinity. …”
Carheart, the critically acclaimed debut album of avantgarde metallers VIRUS is set for release on vinyl in February 2010 and is now available to preorder. The lp will be limited to 500 copies, will include insert with lyrics (published for the first time) and come in a custom made black and white sleeve printed on rough stock carton.
Also a die-hard edition of 25 copies will be available.
Duplicate Records will be sole distributor, and for the time being there will be NO trades or wholesales. The reason for this being that the vinyl is financed 100% by the band, and they need to recoup their expenses as quickly as possible.
The Carheart lp is released on Virulent Music, the band's very own imprint, and a sub-label of Duplicate. All proceeds from this release go directly to the band!
German avantgarde black metallers Grabnebelfürsten are going to split up in Spring 2010, after a twelve years lasting existence. The band parts on amicable terms and because of jobwise and private circumstances making it impossible to ever reach the productivity of their early years again.
In the meantime, the band prepares their farewell release "Pro-Depressiva", an EP containing the last three unreleased tracks of the band, plus a re-recording of the song "Briefe an die Toten".
This is also meant by way of thanks for all the people staying loyal to the band during the difficult last couple of years, with a lot of promises but no new release from Grabnebelfürsten.
All single members are continuing to cooperate in a creative way, not alone in their projects Allvaters Zorn, Das Kammerspiel or Pandora.
The romanian dark rebels Satanochio uploaded their strange cover version of Running Wild - "Siberian Winter". This track is included on the ultimate Running Wild Tribute, released on 13 November 2009 by Remedy Records (Germany). It seems that this track insired the Satanochio unknown pirates to promote it in a very shocking way. As you can see on their myspace page, this song is used to communicate their opinion about the 20 years cellebration of the Romanian Revolution.
The shocking artworks were made by their designer - Costin Chioreanu. The track was mixed by Marius Costache and mastered by Andy LaRoque in Sonic Train Studios Sweden. You can hear the track here:
"This track is very important to us, for many reasons. As you can see, we succed to promote it like it deserves. This is the way we see things here, in the land of chaos. For the romanian fans will be very easy to understand our message, for the others will be maybe a little bit difficult. The most important thing for us is that we made it in time, because our consciousness cannot let us to be indifferent to this madness from our country, and if there is no one left to say it, we will say it, damn it, because we are the mirror and the judge. We are doing this for ourselves first. As any kind of artist, we reflect on our work the image of our times. The real image. And this is a image of a country that is promoting non-values and a anti-cultural informational and aducational system."

The strange incognitos of SATANOCHIO send us the following mysterious mail:
Maybe you'll like this...the first romanian avantgarde/experimental-black metal influenced movie...directed/filmed/edited by Costin Chioreanu (twilight13media - www.myspace.com/twilight13media), after a story by Mr.S (Satanochio). The music is signed by Mr.S under the name of "Extinction Algorithm", same as the movie you can check out entirely for streaming here:
"Hi all. Thought we'd give you a little heads-up on the studio progress. We have so far spent two days in Amper Tone, the same studio we used on The Black Flux, with Bård Ingebrigtsen once again at the rodder. We have recorded drums for 10 songs, and we have 3 more to go before Czral will start laying down his alien strings. He will spend about a week doing that before going with Plenum to Fias Co for bass implements. When the basic tracks are down, we will take a break from the studio for a while to get some words on paper and give those vocal chords a little exercise. Singing and mixing will then ensue, and the final result should be within your reach sometime in the autumn of 2010. Some song titles:
The Continental Drift
Portrayed in the Sediments
Red Sand Choir
Long Distance Corridors
The Agent that Shapes the Desert
Dead Cities of Syria
The Fever Maze
Shutout* (Walker Brothers cover)
Titles in bold have songs assigned to them. Everything is of course subject to change (only 5% of the lyrics actually exist at this point).
There are in total 13 tracks, but we have not yet decided if we'll include them all on the album. We might leave one or two out, and use them as lp bonus tracks or something.
Album title is not decided 100% yet, we have a working title that we might use if nothing better comes to us.
We do have a pretty good idea about the visual concept though, all we need is a suitable artist to realize it for us.
Although only drums have been recorded so far, the sound of them bode very well for the final outcome. We have gone all Berlin '77 and placed several mics where they shouldn't be, in addition to on the actual drum kit, and the result is remarkable. Virus hereby declare an eternal ban on triggers. Seriously, who needs that crap?
It's quite hard to believe, but the weirdest band ever to crawl from the far side of the Iron Curtain, Czech MASTER'S HAMMER - whose Black Metal featured symphonic elements years before the likes of COVENANT and DIMMU BORGIR - have reformed, and are working on a new album! No-one interested in weird, beautiful and transgressive Extreme Metal can be left untouched by news like this!
In addition to our tour report on the ultimate agm metal package with CODE, SOLSTAFIR and SECRETS OF THE MOON we more than kindly invite you to visit the charming photo gallery of Andrea Friedrich / Deceitful Tranquillity who captured some really magical moments of the concert evening in Munich through her camera obscura. This is more than the usual digicam snapshot...!
EDIT, 11.10.09: Just a few days ago AGM got a mail from Brooke of MINE[THORN] regarding my review of MINE[THORN]'s "Junk Hive Noir". Please read this - it concerns the point I had to criticize the most, namely the drum sound and technique. As a musician and drummer myself I can totally understand the band, so I felt this had to be corrected by letting Brooke explain himself. This is what he wrote to us:
Thanks to Tentakle P for the review, glad he got something out of it and we are gratefull for the exposure. I dont normally respond to reveiws (either good or bad) but i felt there was one point worth bringing up. The problems with the drums where entirely technical in nature, we recorded on a midi kit direct into the computer, triggering samples. Unfortunately this was our first experience of such a method (being entierly self produced and recorded in our kitchen) and had issues with the triggering, especially the bass drum. sadly we lacked the time to edit these properly and as such the result is as you hear on the cd. Its a fair point in the review but i would hate to think it was put down to Dans playing when in reallity he is an exceptional musician and did us a great favour by stepping in at the 11th hour to help us out.thanks again for the reveiw and your time its great to see 'zine dedicated to the more outre end the metal spectrum.
Brooke / Minethorn"
Having read this I have even higher hopes for a killer second album. Good luck to the guys of MINE[THORN]!
Yes, our favourite power trio from Norway, the viral boys in VIRUS are ready to begin the recording sessions of the third album.
Quoth themselves; "Hi geeks'n freaks!
Just a little something to inform you that we are soon to begin recording our third album. We will start with the drums around mid-October and take it from there. We currently have about 11 new songs, and we can't wait to get them down on tape. We are really chuffed about the new material, it's a lot more varied than The Black Flux.
Release will occur sometime next year, more info to come.
Thanks, as always, for your support!
I guess my personal amendment to that would be: AWESOME.
Trine + Kim Design Studio celebrate their 10 year anniversary with a retrospective exhibition of their album covers done for such bands as Ulver, Mayhem, Darkthrone, Solefald, Dødheimsgard, Arcturus, She Said Destroy, among others.
This will also be the launch of the anniversary book Decade, album release, and exhibitions from Trine and Kim Sølve's Psykosedyr and Unreality http://unrealityblog.blogspot.com/ projects. In addition, limited edition prints will be for sale.
From the official press sheet (in Norwegian only):
"TI ÅR I KAOTISK SOL
Kullsvarte plateomslag.

"It was a great collaboration to work with Trine and Kim. We gave them a pretty challenging task for the last Mayhem record called "Ordo Ad Chao". When we met the first time to talk about the record I could not tell them really how to manifest "Order to the Chaos" in the artwork. But they just come out with a great idea of symbolism which worked very well; the whole band was very happy and impressed how they managed to combine minimalism and complexity, rustiness and purity, anti-masonic order and alienation... The Great Oppositions. It become a success and we could use some elements of the artwork even for the live performances later. Thank you guys and hails from Mayhem!"
Attila Csihar, Mayhem

That old Norwegian symphonic BM band isn't really worth mentioning at this site, if you ask me, but anyway. Keyboardist Mustis and bassist/vocalist ICS Vortex (whom you know as Simen Hestnaes, from Arcturus, Borknagar and Lamented Souls) have been kicked out from Dimmu Borgir. Never mind why, but here's the interesting thing, from a statement by Hestnaes:
"I've really enjoyed the ride; the DIMMU years have been awesome. I look forward to concentrating fully on my own project now, and the opening possibility to resurrect a band or three."
Further on, not his own words though, but especially exhilarating for us at AGM.com (from Blabbermouth.com):
"Simen will meet his LAMENTED SOULS bandmates in mid-September to plan a new release and a few gigs in Norway. He is also planning to get together with the rest of ARCTURUS to discuss the group's future and a possible reunion."
Yeah. Remember where you read it first (if not at Blabbermouth). Fingers are crossed.
A saddening loss for the international Avantgarde-metal movement, explained fully in this message:
"Jeff Arwadi and Leo Setiawan are leaving Kekal effective immediately. Throughout the past few months, Jeff has been securing all copyright and other rights of the entire Kekal's 'intellectual property' including the band's entire releases back-catalog as well as all official internet sites, and also plan to make some of the band's important albums for free download. However, after seeking some legal advices, he decided to keep Kekal to remain exist as a band (read: institution) albeit without active band-members.
The following is the statement made by Jeff:
I cannot describe how sad I am at this point, but the situation is simply inevitable and I have made a decision, a very tough decision I've been thinking about for more than a couple years now: I am leaving Kekal.
Yesterday, I celebrated the 14th anniversary of Kekal in a very low-key; drinking alone quietly in sadness and grief, remembering all those years we have been through as a band. It is hard to believe that I had to leave this way, but it is better to end like this than to suffer by not being able to express myself properly to the band, and not being able to handle the band all by myself.
After about 3 years of living in such a different atmosphere (being closer to the nature: parks, lakes & mountains, and being placed in the city of 1 million instead of overcrowded 13 million that I used to live), I found myself devoid of all the anger and bitterness within, and further, that turns out that I am unable to express myself with music. I realized that I had used music to express negative feelings for far too long, to channel pain, anger and bitterness, if you don't have them in you any longer to a certain level, you can't force yourself to make that happen or they might influence you back into your life. I am all against fake expressions, and there is no way for me to lie to myself pretending that I still have that kind of negative feelings and continue to write songs for Kekal.
There are indeed some other reasons which contribute to my final decision, but they are more personal and private.
As for the other remaining member, Leo, he agreed that if I leave Kekal, he will leave too. He has his own music project at this moment and he wants to keep his focus on that, so this means he is leaving Kekal with me. And Levi already left Kekal earlier this year.
So does that mean Kekal has ended? No, absolutely not. We all understand that Kekal CANNOT be dissolved as a band. No one has a right to disband Kekal legally as it is already bound to copyrights, licenses and all the legal stuff as an independent institution. But it is a good thing to see Kekal as a band will stay forever in the music world, even without current active band-members. The energy and music will stay there and it will touch many more people in generations to come. All internet sites of Kekal will remain running and active, and the band itself has as many as 7 albums on the back-catalog.
I am asking you fellow music enthusiasts, to keep listening to the music of Kekal and keep share it to all your friends as many as possible. I always believe Kekal should gain many more listeners than it has today, and it's up to us, including myself, to keep spread Kekal's music to the world.
As it turns out, the vinyl wasn't released by Zyklon-B but Darkside Productions. So I guess we were a bit hasty in our conclusions. Still, we don't approve of the altered artwork, but I guess there's not a lot that can be done about that now."
Guess AGM.com was a bit too hasty to get the news out as well! So go ahead and buy the vinyl if you want to. You should want to.
"It has come to our attention that Season Of Mist has granted a vinyl license for The Black Flux to a Greek label named Zyklon-B Productions.
We wish to clarify that we DO NOT support this release. The cover /design has been altered without our knowing or approval whatsoever.
Furthermore, the label represents views that we have no desire to be associated with. Virus is not a political or religious band but we are certainly not against people based on their religious or political views nor their sexual orientation.
The very name of the label is one we do not wish to see on Virus releases, being the name of a chemical weapon used by the Nazis during WWII.
We ask you, the fans to not buy this release - a product we don't approve - and supporting people whose views are totally against what we believe in - individual freedom and music as an artform rather than propaganda.
We do not force our views upon anyone, but we hope you have the brains to think for yourselves.
We are deeply saddened to announce that our brother Paul James Kopecky passed away on June 22, 2009 due to complications related to juvenile diabetes. He was only 37 years old.
For the past two years KOPECKY was unable to play because of Paul's deteriorating health. We hoped beyond hope to play together again, but unfortunately it was not to be.
Paul was an exceptional drummer whose unique style shaped and helped define the KOPECKY sound. His drumming was powerful but precise, innovative but instinctive, and always, always tasteful. He played selflessly, crafting his parts to suit the song, not his ego. We were always suprised by his phenomenal talent, and we often marveled at how he could, with a minimum of practice, play extremely complicated tracks in just one or two takes in the recording studio. And in concert, Paul was solid as bedrock and played his absolute best despite being frequently ill on stage.
His excellent drumming can be heard on all five KOPECKY CD's: Kopecky(Mellow, 1999), Serpentine Kaleidoscope (Cyclops, 2000), Orion (M.A.C.E., 2001), Sunset Gun (Musea, 2003), and Blood (UnicornDigital, 2006).
The world of progressive rock has lost an amazing drummer, and this planet has lost one of the kindest, most warm-hearted souls thatever walked the earth. He will surely be missed by many.
Thanks to all friends and fans who have offered their condolences.
Your kind words are deeply appreciated.
Decline of the I, A.K.(Vorkreist, Eros Necropsique, Neo Inferno 262) 's solo project, born from the ashes of Love Lies Bleeding launches his Myspace with an advanced mixed track. It could be described as a mix of Burzum, Neurosis, with elecrtonical elements.
SRK (ex-Vorkreist) is the vocalist. Necrolith (Merrimack) is on drums.
The band will soon finish the mix of the album and will looking for a label.

Dark Progressive Metal act IKUINEN KAAOMS signs with agm newcomer label Maddening Media. They will start the first recording sessions for their forthcoming album "Fall Of Icons" on May 17th. The release is scheduled for autumn 2009.
To shorten the waiting, MADDENING MEDIA and IKUINEN KAAMOS offer their latest EP "Closure" both as stream and as a high-resolution download (320 kbps) for free:
for a short while, at least. Cut&Paste from their myspace blog:
"RESPLENDENT GROTESQUE RELEASED JUNE 1ST!
Due to some serious errors in the printing and pressing of the CD and cover art, we have had to delay the release of Resplendent Grotesque until June 1st.
We apologise profusely that we weren't able to meet our initial scheduled date for the album but, as well as correcting the errors, this will give us the time to prepare and plan a more thorough and exciting release on the same day across Norway, Europe and hopefully the US and Asia. We will try to plan some more live shows around June to support the release and there will be some listening sessions/release parties planned for March/April and at the Inferno festival.
We want the album to be perfect in every way, to meet the vision we have of our music and to present it with the ideal aesthetic. We have taken great care in the design and artwork for the release, to make it something worth owning and treasuring. We hope you understand and support us in this. It's a few more weeks to wait, but it will be worth it in the end.
We will continue to preview tracks from the album, starting again in the next few weeks. We will also have a new Resplendent Grotesque limited tee shirt celebrating the release designed by KTL, our lettering/script illustrator for Nouveau Gloaming, who has previously illustrated the music of Dissection, Watain, Deathspell Omega, Kaamos, Dead Congregation, Teitanblood and Opeth.
Major Label Industries proudly announces the signing of Portuguese metal vanguardists ThanatoSchizO. The contract will be valid for a semi-acoustic release coming out in 2009. The record should have re-worked songs from all ThanatoSchizO albums, namely SchizoLevel, InsomniousNightLift, Turbulence and Zoom Code, with an even more avant-garde approach, with ethnical and progressive distinctive touches already hinted in the "regular" releases by the Santa Marta de Penaguião’s band.
Guilhermino Martins, ThanatoSchizO’s guitar player, states that the recording of something like this has been in the collective’s mind for quite some time. "It’s funny, because the first time we ever came across the idea of reworking our songs in this format happened due to a (store) FNAC’s demand, as the only way we could possibly perform there to promote our second album. We liked it and ever since then, for every new album we release, we also work on parallel acoustic remakes of the songs”. Never happy or satisfied with the amazing results they’ve been getting with every new release and with the latest Zoom Code still hot, the timing for a release like this doesn’t seem to bother ThanatoSchizO:"In this period of our career, the most exciting step for us is exactly this: to record and release a semi-acoustic album and add some ethnical influences to it, along with a few other musical approaches, which come naturally with the experience we have gathered so far."
There isn’t a working title to the album yet. It will be recorded in the next few months in a studio soon to be announced.
The band's sophomore set of vibrations features the vibrant cast of Aort, Kvohst, Vicotnik, and Adrian Erlandsson, and promises to be quite the spectral confection. The album's euphonious green meteors will bombard Norway on April 6, and the rest of Europe on May 4. Release dates elsewhere remain undisclosed.
<code> intend to use spring and summer heat to materialize at these locations:
April 11, 2009 - Inferno Festival - Oslo, Norway
July 18, 2009 - Devilstone Open Air - Anyksciai, Lithuania

"Old Crown, New Spawn" is mostly orthodox metal compilation, comprising over two hours of black metal ranging from raw and proto-black to symphonic, avantgarde and experimental.
The compilation will be available for free download on April 15.
Bands willing to contribute should contact Aspherical Asphyxia no later than March 15 via firstname.lastname@example.org.
For those who just can't get enough of those crazy Norwegians, who find the Black Flux a wee bit too dark, here's a little treat from the vaults, as proclaimed at Virus' myspace:
"That infamous little ditty of ours, Saturday Night Virus (featuring Kripz) is featured on the Sordid Zine compilation cd#1 which can be downloaded here:
Grab it, snag it, dig it.
PS; for those not "in the know", this is from the same recording session as Carheart. We didn't think it would fit on the album, so we left it out. There are several other unreleased tracks out there which might end up somewhere someday:)"

Norwegian avant-garde metal pioneers RAM ZET are currently looking for a new label. After 2 marvellous albums on Spikefarm Records and one splendid killer on Tabu Records RAM ZET have progressed well with the recordings for their 4th album. We wish them the very best to find the right record company to support their unique sound well in the future.
Cut from their myspace blog... I removed the commercials though, you know where to buy your Solefald-related gifts if you want to.
I am happy to announce that Solefald have inked a two-album deal with Indie Recordings in Oslo. After a twelve-year voyage over the foreign seas, it feels good to anchor in a Norwegian harbour. Indie having distributed our last releases thoroughly, we trust they will deliver in the campaign for our forthcoming albums.
As Lazare is now the happy father of a little boy (born in late November - our congratulations!), and I am currently ill, our next album will be out in the early Fall 2009. We won't go G'n'R on you, though - that is a promise!
The first pressing of our compilation album "The Circular Drain" is going gently and steady. It is now distributed by Season of Mist in France and by Indie in Norway, which means that you can order the album through ordinary retailers in those countries.
I wish you a merry Yule, with plenty of happiness and love (screw the old hag Misery, she will come for you in January... ho ho!)
Strangers AARNI release their new EP 'Omnimantia' It can be ordered on the AARNI webpage www.aarni.info. Soon you will read more about this very peculiar son of Aleister Pratchett and C.G. Lovecraft on agm.com!
"Yes, we decided to call Omnimantia an EP as the total playing time clocks at 56 minutes, while decency dictates the minimum length for a LP as 60 minutes...
Obviously no lengthy booklet included with this one, but you can find the lyrics at the Aarni website as usual.
Also a special feature: every copy of Omnimantia will feature unique handwritten liner notes by Yours Truly, who also accepts your requests as to their content. In other words, every copy will be different from the next and worth a fortune in the future.
Pimp my EP and laugh all the way to the bank!"
ENSLAVED SHOOTS VIDEO WITH AWARD WINNING DIRECTOR PATRIC ULLAEUS
Norway’s ENSLAVED recently traveled to Gothenburg, Sweden to work with Revolver Film Company director and Norwegian Grammy Award winner Patric Ullaeus (Dimmu Borgir, Keep Of Kalessin, In Flames) to shoot a video for "The Watcher,” a track off their recently Billboard-charting album, Vertebrae.
A new organization operating in Montreal has just been given life. Unsound New York, which is established in New York since 2006, now has a brother:
UNSOUND MTL is the Canadian chapter of UNSOUND NYC. Established in october 2008, UNSOUND MTL is an organisation dedicated to bringing the best in live underground music to the stage in Montreal. Spanning a range of obscure sounds from dark ambient, industrial noise and power electronics to doom, drone and post metal, we will be hosting a diverse cross section of some of today's most challenging artists. Currently curated by two independent experimental music labels, ANNIHILVS POWER ELECTRONIX and THTFL in NY, and by AUN and KALI, CYCLIC LAW and ANGLE.REC in Montreal. With over a decade of collective experience organising and promoting live events UNSOUND seeks to make a lasting impact on the underground scene. To reach this goal, we are seeking partnerships with labels, promoters, and artists to foster a sense of community based on mutual respect.
Again some news on our Indonesian/Canadian comrades: We finally signed a worldwide licensing deal with a U.S. record label NePlusUltra Music for our 7th album "Audible Minority", and they will release the album in December 2008. NePlusUltra Music is a new label who understands Kekal's vision, and we believe they will back us up full-force in order to break the limits.
The first pressing of the CD version will be a special Digipak format, strictly limited to 777 copies hand-numbered. Digital version will also be available for download. The most interesting part is that through NePlusUltra Music website, we will offer the Pay-what-you-want / Free Download version at the time of release. This legal Free Download version will have 8 out of 11 tracks of the album with no time-limit. /.../ Official album design T-shirt will also be made.
An old amateur clip of a KOROVAKILL gig has shown up in youtube. It seems to be from the era 1995-1997 an features the song "Trip to the bleeding Planets (Unto the Light)". This is the only video of KOROVA in the web so far:
CODE have announced that to change their singer was once again necessary, and to top it off, their new album could be released this winter:
It's time to come clean and show our true faces, update and inform our advocates and devotees what has been going on behind cloaked veils both in the studio and in our lineup ranks . . .
We would like to announce that Simen "Vortex" Hestenaes is not a part of Code and will not be taking part in the forthcoming album.
After successfully performing live with Code during the phenomenal shows this last year, the band have resolved to continue working with original vocalist Kvohst.
Those who have come to appreciate and love our rare, avantgarde and unique first album 'Nouveau Gloaming,' will completely understand our need to continue where we left off and keep the integral spirit of the band and our music intact. It is a real pleasure to have the old, true lineup working together again.
Kvohst has already finished writing and recording the vocals on the new album and we have set a date in early October for the final mix with the release coming this winter. All we can tell you for now is that it sounds astoundingly necrospiritual and essentially Code!
We will update you with song titles, lyrics and perhaps even some samples in the coming weeks . . .
We thank you for your support and dedication . . .
Here's what Snorre Ruch had to say regarding the new, upcoming Thorns full-lenght album:
We are in the process of recording our second album now. We are working in Oera Studio here in Trondheim with Jostein Ansnes and a couple of other good technicians. We started recording drums on September 1. and will start recording guitars and bass the coming week. Vocals will be recorded in a separate session later this fall, and we will use some time with additional instruments and recordings to accompany the basic instrumentation. We hope to deliver the master to Moonfog before Christmas and that the album will be out first quarter of 2009.
We are proud to say that we have 10 great songs written by myself and Jon Wesseltoft. Lyrics are mainly written by Aldrahn. The material on this album is mostly harder, darker and more energetic than on the 2001 album. Gratification guarantied!!
"Dornenreich was our fist choice, but the train station was closer"
The austrian legendary bards Dornenreich were filmed during the Summer Breeze show with no more and no less than ten cameras. It is said that many of the audience will reckognise themselves on the video...that we will see! The name of this attempt is Nachtreisen, wich for you guyz who unfortunatley don't speak this great language is called Nocturnal journys or night journies, depends who the translator might be.
German label Cold Dimensions has released a bunch of band pretending to be Ulver on a great double CD tribute to the big boyz of the sound: Ulver. "My own Wolf: A new approach to Ulver" is a compilation by mostly young and very interesting artists whose time is just arriving!
An old ent once said: "Metal has changed, I can feel it on this compilation..."
The statement from some other dimension:
"My Own Wolf: A New Approach to ULVER",an ULVER tribute compilation achieved by an armarda of young and comparably ambitious artists that are rather inspired by the band's great spirit and artistic vision than a mere form of musical expression. Thus this double CD contains songs from almost the band's entire opus (from the legendary 1993 demo tape "Vargnatt" up to "Blood Inside" from 2005) in a wide range of styles and musical colours.
The guilty who have (no) pride:
Unfurl - Lost In Moments
Avathar - Utreise
Mura Hachigu feat. Nokturnes - Blinded By Blood
Smohalla - Le Trône De La Tragédie
Asmodée - Wolf And Hatred
Selvmord - Wolf And Devil
Sael - Wolf And Passion
Otzepenevshiye - Wolf And Destiny (Forest Fire Version)
Wardaemonic - Nattens Madrigal
FB[FoRce] - Graablick Blew Hun Vaer
Karna - Naturmystikk
Fluoryne - Not Saved
Year Zero - Nowhere / Catastrophe
Sinestesia - Tomorrow Never Knows
Pryapisme - In The Red
Joey Hopkins Midget Factory - Catalept
Aidan Baker - Eitttlane
Panacea Enterpainment - Porn Piece Or The Scars Of Cold Kisses
Project:A - Ulver
Cataplus - Høyfjeldsbilde
Jääportit - Gnosis
Wheel of Knowledge - Lyckantropen Themes
Zweizz - Kledt I Nattens Farget
Bosque - Utreise
Noises of Russia - Darling, Didn't We Kill You?
Ashtar - The Marriage Of Heaven & Hell Medley
Death metal's most beloved Hippie offspring, the prodigal tech/prog masters CYNIC, have, as most of you probably know by now, arisen from the ashes they left after 1993's masterpiece "Focus". On 27 October (one day later in the US), Season Of Mist will release "TRACED IN AIR", featuring psychedelic artwork by Venosa, responsible for the mind-enhancing visuals of "Focus". The track list is as follows:
1. Nunc Fluens
2. The Space for this
3. Evolutionary Sleeper
4. Integral Birth
5. The Unknown Guest
6. Adam's Murmur
7. King of those who know
8. Nunc Stans
Claims Paul Masvidal: "We're really excited to share this new collection of songs with you. It's an honest record, and a really enjoyable listening experience. Takes you on a journey into the center of your heart and mind. Many moods and colors to occupy the sonic landscapes. It feels like Cynic! All I ask is that you surrender and allow. All you really need to do is show up with open ears. The music will do the work for you. I promise." Hear a demo track here.
From 4 October to 17 December, CYNIC traverse the European mainland (+British Isles) with fellow progsters OPETH, beginning at the ProgPower, moving through no less than 13 countries. Progdeath to the people, catch them while you can!
Eight prominent visual artists from the music underground have formed a kult of art under the Catalyst name and will take over San Francisco with their art. They have created for a great number of bands like SunnO))), Neurosis, Khanate, Jesu... the names are: Artists Included: Aaron Turner, Josh Graham, Seldon Hunt, Stephen Kasner,
Aaron Horkey, Florian Bertmer, Justin Bartlett and Dwid Hellion.
And the statement is
" The exhibit will bring together an underground community of artists in which aural and visual expressions converge. Artwork on display will comprise of a wide source of media, including new two-dimensional paintings, drawings, video installations, screen prints as well as an installation of seminal works from each of the artists’ extensive catalogues."
Indie recordings are extremely proud these days because of the signing of Norway's finest- ENSLAVED. Their new sounds collected, recorded and arranged will be released under the name "Vertebrae” trough Indie records. According to the Big Ear who heard the new recording it should be a quantum leap for Extreme Metal"! ENSLAVED. will seek and destroy Europe on their upcoming tour with Stonegard and Krakow. The band themselves are kinda enthusiastic about all of this (yeah, they still haven't lost their spirit!) so they issued an official statement on their site:
"We’ve known the people behind the label for years, and have first-hand knowledge of their dedication, enthusiasm and professionalism. This signing makes perfect and utter sense to us; and we are proud to start off this cooperation with our strongest album ever”
Thus Spoke Zarathustra: "If 'Carheart' was the "Monty Python" album of Virus, 'The Black Flux' is definitely the "David Lynch" one"
And yes! One shall use VIRUS' new album "Black Flux" to cure the normality, the monotony of the day! Flowing riffs, wild basses, steady drumming with headspinning fills...and only three persons behind it all! Enough said about it, we'll all check the review section for more soon I hope. Just to add that the dark yet not difficult sound of the album was hammered (and nailed) in Amper Tone Studios (Enslaved and Aura Noir found their satisfaction there among others...). When you open the box except to find "A maelstrom of creativity, and a flux of musical ambition", you will also whiteness :
1. Stalkers of the Drift
2. As Virulent as You
3. Lost Peacocks
4. The Black Flux
5. Intermission: The Ocean Highway
6. Inward Bound
8. Shame Eclipse
9. Strange Calm (!)
Not only Enslaved but also CRONIAN (ex-ION) signed to Indie recordings. Borknagar members Oystein G. Brun and Vintersorg decided to record their second album in a pro studio and it seems to have payed off because the Big Ear says that the sound is crystal-clean, aggressive and mighty with a quite unique atmosphere. Knowing who is behind this project you shouldn't feel surprised at all!
So the CRONIAN said: "Being friends and associates of Indie Recordings for years, we are firmly sure that this cooperation will bring the CRONIAN expedition to new boundaries, even beyond boundaries. This second CRONIAN album feels like a quantum leap for our band's musical evolvement and even for us as musicians. We are genuinely proud to finally get this album out to all the genuine music lovers around the globe. We really believe that this album offers something really unique in terms of atmosphere combined with aggression, something nobody has done before!"
After a long wait the debut MCD of DOL THEETA is finally released on 10th of August. DOL THEETA represents the atmospheric, psychedelic, meditative sides of DOL AMMAD mastermind Thanasis Lightbridge. "Goddess" is the vanguard of the forthcoming full-lenght album and comes in a digi-pack with marvellous design and a video-clip of the title song.
The video of "Goddess" also can be watched on the renewed web-page of Thanasis:
Welcome to the new NEWS SECTION! Here you will find the latest scene news of avant-garde metal: new innovative releases, live gigs of the weirdest metal acts, rumours about Mike Patton's underpants,... whatever strange things happen all across the world of experiMetal.
