Your Top 10 AGM Albums Of 2009

Story online since:  06.01.2010 / 12:02:57
.........................................................................................................................................................

Another year ends and another bunch of impressive, inventive, innovative, un-intuitive and idiosyncratic albums came out with the year that is now gone. We've been running a poll for some time to let our readers vote for their most recognised albums released during this past year, and now the voting is over and hereby I declare the results, starting with the most voted masterpiece:

1 - <code> - Resplendent Grotesque

Thor:
The wait was worth it… a classic in metal music.

Oliver:
AGM Pop masterpiece of the year.

Adryuu:
Probably the best of the year. I keep returning and the bass and vocal lines are just beauty. 'Jesus Fever' for Eurovision? Heh.

Ulv:
Dark and intensive, not a suprise but still a great job!

Bernd:
An album that set a new benchmark.

2 - Sólstafir - Köld

Thor:
Who needs fukkin’ style borders?

Ulv:
Mixing some great stuff, these frozen desert weirdos managed to make an ultimate post black metal stoner doom whatever you may call it masterpiece!

Jonny Lignano:
From the beginning to the end: awesome.

3 - Klabautamann - Merkur

Adryuu:
They seem to go further in their unique direction departing from black metal, making this album not only that, but an inventive progressive masterpiece.

Thor:
There are worlds beyond the woods to discover - if only more bands would be that brave-hearted and curious!

4 - Bergraven - Till Makabert Väsen

aVoid:
Creative darkness in its most personal form: memento mori!

Thor:
A deeply fascinating & thrilling trip beyond the border of the ratio.

Oliver:
This guy is much more sophisticated and avant-garde than Czral, sorry buddy, ha! No seriously, check this album out.

Adryuu:
This album impressed me a lot, didn't expect that after Döedsvisioner. Very original, dark, personal, intimate and expressing extreme emotions without the need of an extreme sound.

5 - Amesoeurs - Amesoeurs

Adryuu:
Completely unexpected discovering. It's a shame they already disbanded before even releasing the album. Urban black metal influenced post punk with crazy female vocals like you never heard before.

aVoid:
French Melancolie wonder; a sad but fitting end to this outlet of Niege's genius.

Tentakel P.:
"Amesoeurs" was really a big surprise for me, and the more sad it is that this was the first and the last album.

6 - Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions

aVoid:
The glacially monolithic surge just became symphonic. Attila opens the portal to the Inner Kingdoms.

Ulv:
Destructurising submental patterns.

Glenn Doom:
For all you travelers on the avant garde metal highway, this is one stop you should make. It will test your boundaries and leave you breathless, just like The Corrs.

7 - Thy Catafalque - Róka Hasa Rádió

Jobst:
This album is indeed so rich and is a saucerful of secrets and therefore, one should explore it with hunger and patience, for this is a hidden treasure and I certainly hope that this review will encourage listening to a unique band.

Jonny Lignano:
This album counts for 34 % of the total quality that was released in 2009.

8 - Fleurety - Ingentes Atque Decorii Vexilliferi Apokalypsis

Oliver:
Because it's not avant-garde at all, which makes it kind of avant-garde considering the band's history.

Ulv:
A great re-creation of the "classics", interesting crew on the recordings!

aVoid:
Rawness obsolete. One from the archives, proof that there is still life in those old bones, and that the nekrokult is far from dead (or alive, depending on perspective...).

9 - Secrets of the Moon - Privilegivm

Thor:
Still too dark and too heavy for me to listen, but a "grower" for sure - yes, that's for you, sG!

Bernd:
Impressive, dark and powerful!

Jonny Lignano:
This album is impossible to describe in one sentence.

10 - Maudlin of the Well - Part the second

aVoid:
Metal? Hardly almost not, but still. Toby Driver's fan-funded zombie resurrection of his first orchestra proved a hypnotizingly beautiful exploration of sounds in the leftmost fields of Progressive and Metal.

Adam Matlock:
Those disgruntled motW fans who have dismissed Kayo Dot will not find this record to be the comeback they hoped for. Instead, they'll find a great sounding album, full of textures and techniques not at all common to metal that enrich the music as a whole, especially the heavier sections.

Jonny Lignano:
5 songs, 5 adjectives: awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome

So these are your votes! The <code> guys must be very glad, as well as all the rest. It's nice to see some "new" bands in the results, with the more "veteran" ones. Thank you all for voting and may this new year bring a lot more of avant-garde masterpieces in sonic form for all of us to discover, we are looking forward to present them to you, and to see you keeping participating for the next votings! You are welcome in the forum to further discuss the results, as always.
