 One-hit Wonders
Bands that I personally think have written one really great song and nothing else (of the same quality). Of course, there are people who are bound to disagree with this but still I think it is interesting to love just one song by a particular artist and not care for the rest. Feel free to add your own. Abruptum - De Profundis Mors Vas CousumetI do own some of their earlier albums but they have never been more than odd curiosities. This song still blows my mind every time I listen to it and as far as I know it is absolutely unique. Did I mention that it is awesome? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3vyf4w-RfcAutumn Leaves - Serpent90s Danish death metal. Not the best song ever within this genre but simply six minutes of high quality material. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7YP6j4cQWUConfessor - Eve of SalvationThis song is almost up there with the Abruptum track. I have never heard anything that comes close to this and that includes the rest of the Confessor's releases, of course. Beautiful & atmospheric technical doom? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufJsyKjbI1ECrisis - Working Out The GravesThe first time I heard this song I hardly had any notion of metal and its subgenres but I knew I liked it. I was disappointed to learn that I liked nothing else by Crisis. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Lfxq9NQwAsDemoncy - Denial of the Holy ParadisePure black metal essence to my ears. Nothing else by Demoncy comes even close to this song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2C__R52JeYIncubus - Curse of the Damned CitiesMakes me want to bang my head and scream. A rare song from a genre that rarely does anything but make me want to press 'next'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Cj5yX7gEE0Slayer - Angel of DeathJust like the Incubus song. I really do not like Slayer beyond this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6_zsJ8KPP0

 Re: One-hit Wonders
I'll have to check out that Abruptum song, maybe, maybe.
But that Crisis album rocks in its entirety, in this case I'd say it's a one album wonder, though. And Slayer, Angel of Death? Really? There are much, much, much, much better Slayer songs.
On topic, I haven't listened to every album but maybe The Haunted - Hate Song? I remember liking a lot the song but caring flying shits about the album. Can't think of much more, bad monday.

Quote: There are much, much, much, much better Slayer songs. Really? ABRUPTUM had it with that song, and some songs on the Evil Genius comp (demos etc)... when they actually (semi)wrote SONGS. Good basis for a thread, I know that there are quite a few of these but I cannot come up with any right now. I mean, unless mainstream pop crap like Gwen Stefani counts (Hollaback Girl = great song).

Really. Seasons in the Abyss and South of Heaven are full of them. Also, maybe, some from Divine Intervention. That's all personal taste, though.

Gonna have to agree with Adryuu on this one. Slayer has had their ups and downs, but I would hardly call them a one-hit wonder. Even Psychopathy Red off their latest album rivals some of their older material for a "best song" spot. Of course, that's all opinion. I can't really contribute other than that. I don't tend to think of bands in terms of individual songs, but rather entire albums and ideas. For instance, probably the easiest example for me, Metallica. I really like Kill 'Em All, I would call them a one-hit wonder based on that album alone... but they do like bits and pieces of their later albums (up to about The Black Album where they plummet off the chart, as much as it pains me to sound like a typical Metallica hipster). Maybe this has something to do with MTV and radio not really picking up on extreme metal here in the states, as I know it gets much more exposure in the EU. I guess I could say I enjoyed Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance," but not anything else. It just makes me want to dance.

Well, it's got a fat beat, it has a lot of attitude, it's pretty minimalistic and the small melodic elements kick ass. The sub bass drop that enters at an odd beat really makes it grow too.

 Re: One-hit Wonders
KMFDM - Juke Joint Jezebel KMFDM for me is a very mysterious band. Not only because of the sound and the aesthetics, but also because they have so many songs I don't like, but still I can`t stop listening to them, because I found them demanding, and thus interesting. Anyway, they have a lot of good songs and a lot of crap songs, but "Juke Joint Jezebel" is definetly a fucking killer. Their absolute super-hit and a song I cant stop listening to...exspecially while driving fast in the night with my VW Golf on the German Autobahn

 Re: One-hit Wonders
Count Raven - JenI am not sure how but I managed not to include Count Raven in the original post. They do have other good songs but none of them come close to this fantastic song about the girl Jen. I do not know who she is but when I hear this song I want to find out. This is doom metal purely by songwriting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpHPTNs3dCsI have updated the original post with YouTube links. Go check those songs out! They deserve to be heard.
