 Idiot Flesh and the aftermath
I have spent the last few months working my way through these guys entire discography. That means Charming Hostess, Idiot Flesh, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Faun Fables. The most awesome music I have ever heard and must be considered abundantly avant-garde. Why haven't I heard of them sooner?

yeah I'm a big fan of all of the above. I've been revisiting Idiot Flesh's Nothing Show this past week. Black Sand and Blue Head back to back are soooo good.

I think someone in Sleepytime had stuff to do with THINKING PLAGUE in the 80's... so add them to your playlist too!
Btw, I am one of the unlucky ones who've never gotten into any of the bands you mentioned. What have I done wrong? Where should I start?

Start with The Nothing Show by Idiot Flesh, and Grand Opening and Closing by SGM.

I'm in the market for anything that resembles these bands. Unfortunately the Idiot Flesh cd's are almost impossible to get a hold of. I've been looking for "Fancy" for almost a year now. You can get (legal) mp3's though, "http://www.filewatcher.com/b/ftp/ftp.bunglefever.com/pub/Idiot%20Flesh.0.0.html". And in my opinion you should start with "Fancy" by Idiot Flesh and "Of Natural History" by SGM. All albums are amazing though so you can't go wrong.
For you who know these guys: This is how I think music should be, but what else have I missed?

Not sure, but I think they have given their consent. My biggest clue is that it's listed on Wikipedia in the Idiot Flesh article, but i could be wrong.
