..guys, try Gargamel (Nor) - Descending, very good material reminding VdGG and Hammill´s voice.

I enjoyed what I heard on their myspace, though the tracks are pretty lo-fi and probably don't do the instruments all the justice they deserve.

Sort of proto-AGM, with various instrumental lineups but often the saxes of David Jackson (sometimes two at once), the heavily tweaked organ sounds of Hugh Banton and Peter Hammill's operatic singing and shrieking steering the ship.
By all accounts, they're prog, but to me they represent some of the darkest leanings of that genre (that are also cohesive.) Big epic songs/compositions with tons of melodic development, and plenty of breaks for dissonant squalls, within the song form and outside of it. As much of a modern-jazz influence as a modern classical one, firmly propelled by Guy Evans on the drumkit with surprising lightness (and, dare I say, funkiness?).
their most energetic release is probably Vital, the live album. Overall their best, IMO, is H to He Who Am the Only One, with the right balance of accessibility, sheer power and avant leanings. ******************************************************************************** I have the 1971 release called PRAWN HEARTS, and I like it alot, so I will add the H to He Who am the only one to my wantlist...Oh yeah, I for sure got that one because of the recommendation here at agm()com.

 Re: Van Der Graaf Generator
I could never get into these guys - I always thought Peter Hammill sounded like Rob Halford. Their music was always too "lightweight" for me. More like a weirder Supertramp.

 Re: Van Der Graaf Generator
Rob Halford? Hm... maybe I should reevaluate Halford's vocals then... Actually, if you compare them to other prog bands in the early 70's, they are often a lot darker and menacing than their contemporaries (Yes, Genesis, King Crimson - before Red, that is, etc). Their use of dissonant chords and abrasive saxophone noises is pretty unparalleled in that genre at that time! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Earfbot_uIThe section at 5.10 ("out of control") & the disintegration of the music at the end of the song = pure gold.
