Post A fine example of Avant-Experience
Here comes a four-part interview with Timothy Leary at his famous house in Millbrook. I know the film-quality is not the best one possible, BUT, it's the first time I see this filmed interview and I've been following Leary's information since more than 5 years. I think it is excessively interesting to understand where LSD is coming from in Occident for anyone who has done it, or for anyone interested in doing it. This specific interview must have been executed between 1963 and 1970 but I'm not sure.

I'm posting this because I've always seen many similarities between a gratifying LSD experience and Avant-Garde Music in general. It is all about growth, pioneering, self-expanding and world-exploration.

Enjoy !

When Leary says that with lsd, "you go out of your mind", I would add that with avant-garde music, "you go out of music as a genre". But that's kind of obscure right ha ha!

Thats quite interesting. As well as this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT31oB2v ... ed&search=

Never knew much about this guy but I like your comparison of LSD and AM. Where a musical sytle like Black/Death Metal can be compared to drugs like alcohol or speed (strenght, aggression, good/bad moods) avantgarde metal surely is far beyond such conditions. A musical trigger to leave behind the earthly dogmas of live and death...

sounds freaky, and I never (luckily) enjoyed an LSD-trip.

I have always been interested in doing an LSD trip but I have far too many demons to defeat as it is and I wouldn´t want to face pictures of my thoughts because those can be scary as fuck. Plus, I havn´t found someone that I would trust enough to watch me during my trip in case I would plan to do something really dangerous since everything on LSD appears to be a good idea.

Well I say you should do it nonetheless and all by yourself. Of course I want to be a little bit provocative, but if you were always to keep yourself away from new experiences, claiming as a reason that you do have too many demons to defeat, well I think you wouldn't do anything at all in the long run. Look at yourself once and for all and see who you are, even if you're not ready to face pictures of your thoughts.

We all have many demons to defeat inside, and I think it is part of our personal upbringing to face them all one by one. LSD is a powerful channel for your own demons to materialize all at once. Many Shamanic practices, at least as related by Jan Kounen, are solely grounded in the experience of your demonic self, of your ultime fears, of your personal ugliness. I will always remember this Shaman saying to one of his pupils, while this man was having a serious badtrip : "See, this is who you are inside and this is who you have always been until now. What I want you to do now, is to transcend this part of yourself."

This is indeed very frightening and I had a few nightmarish bad trips, but while it is almost disgusting when you're "inside" it, it can become so much more satisfying once you realise that you've survived your own demons.

And I wouldn't say that every idea is good on LSD, at least not for me and not for the people whom I've done it with. I could say that most of your usual ideas, everything that you always believed to be good, cool or obvious, suddenly seems to be so ridiculous and naive. That's what I can say for now.

But don't be afraid, you are MUCH MORE than the sum of your own demons. You have created them ever since you were born, but they haven't re-created yourself. Perhaps you are only what they want you to be - for now - but believe me, they can become what you want them to be. And that's the most important step to take in order to become who you really are inside.

How do I defeat them when they materialize? Do I just wait until it´s over or are there tools to make them vanish and be destroyed?

You are probably right with what you said. Trust me that I am all up for new experiences, otherwise I wouldn´t listen to the music we love so much here, and LSD is something on my map... but you have to understand that I have a mad fantasy and I am not saying that I am scared of taking LSD to make myself sound particularly disordered or deranged. It is just that I really am in fear when I think about facing these things. I won´t get around it though...

Hey hi there... Yeah I know what you're talking about, at least I had the privilege to do LSD at a quite young age so I didn't even know what a demon was back then, and therefore it was impossible for me to have any negative expectations. But I soon discovered it "on the spot" so to speak.

I think that just waiting until the trip is over is always a possibility, but its very scary, because it can last for hours. I think that doing something manual, something holding most of your muscular attention, is a great idea. Breathing deeply and thoroughly is also something I would advise you to do in case of panic. Just enjoy the air flow going through your chest and stomach. A demon is something that prevents you to be and to do what you are, so going out for example, take a walk and enjoy the sun are a few simple activities you should consider. Its all about being the most basic of yourself and rediscover how simple and beautiful it is to be just that.

Yet, I've once stayed in my bed for a few hours, observing myself freaking out and that can be a powerful experience emotionally and intellectually. While I was into it I thought I was seriously gonna die, so its THAT intense. Some have called it the "little death" or a "dying to yourself" kind of thing. I don't really care about what we should name it. Its just the worst thing ever, but also the most intense. You're slowly aknowledging the fact that you never quite knew who and what you are.

I suggest you do it with a few friends so you can have a talking or two. If you do it alone, though, be ready for a shivering and sweaty introspection.

Have to go to sleep now! have a good night!
