So, it started on the Lvmen thread so I decided to open a new one!
For the last year or so i've been listening to a lot of hardcore punk and noise rock bands, broadening my views :p

I'd not really call it a genre but a tag for hardcore bands that decided to try a different approach on their music, but still keeping some findamental elements of hadrcore (lyrics, singing, beats or so)

notice: when I speak of hardcore I'm not speaking about the cool/nu breed/emo "hardcore" (aka disturbed and so on)

Some great bands who are connected with this are Lvmen, Neurisis....

it's quite hard to clasify and dig out but there are also a lot of obscure hardcore bands who experimented with their music like Karp(usa) or Testimony(slovakia)....

The only "hardcore" (some people say they're metalcore, some have called them "nintendocore") band I can really stand to listen to is HORSE The Band, and really only because they're so off the wall; they did an entire concept album about pizza.

hell yes, HORSE the Band are quite unique band, totally mindblowing...

but there are tons of good hc/posthc/emo bands. Try Metroshifter (emo).

Haven't listened much to horse the band but I'll give it a try!

try Cult of Luna last album... little bit ´mainstream´ in posthc, but def quite good. Try also that dvd for the album, great live appearance. Saw ISIS last month, not really happy about their performance...

I don´t know, there are tons of ´em... Torche, Year of No Light, Pelican (lat one suckc a little bit), Mouth of the Architect are quite good, Rosetta is mindblowing - mostly live on stage, A Storm of Light are quite famous (but I don´t like), Omega Massif are unique, Lento (made colaboration with Ufomammut, who are also perfect), def try Russian Circles (!!!).. try few...

there are at least five to six differnt genres or lines of post-hardcore core ...means bands and styles that ahve taken hardcore fruther


the crust / neo crust (sometimes with a little sludge) - his hero is gone, tragedy, dystopia etc

power violence and its more experimental elements - man is the bastard

original metal core - botch, DEP, converge, VOD

somewhere between above and below lies refused

screamo - a jude obscure

grind influenced hardcore - morser, swarmmm

unfortunatley a lotta of the stuff, actually most fo the stuff released in each genre is derivative crap like most metal

and why are poeple including distinctly sludge/doomy bands like neurisis and cult of luna in post-hardcore.....?!!just coz word of law was hardcore dont mean they are now

actually the best way to understand post-hardcorew would be to listen tot he post damaged black flag records as well as the fuagzi albums

noise rock is another story ...starts with stuff like early big black and swans and peaked in mid-90's with stuff like unsane....lotta lotta great bands...also has corssovers with sub-pop seattle scene

I recommend Made Out of Babies... their last album especially, which they recorded with/for the respectable label that is The End Records

Yer´ right! Best way to noise/post/..blabla is through Swans, Ein. Neubaten (heard Celan? quite good one!), Sonic Youth, Fugazi, The Jesus Lizard, Shellac, Slint, Health... uuh.. ...

In the whole truth, it´s good to start listening also experimental/psychedelic bands from 60´s to 80´s, to get the whole view.

ad. yes, Neurosis, CoL tagged as post-hc. Not really, mentioned them, but for instance Neurosis are called as the same starters of post-hc and CoL? Did you ever see doom/sludge bastards in pink shirts and green shoes?

Would System of a Down be considered "hardcore"? I know they've become very rich and popular, but I still think the influence of hardcore is very evident in their music.

i.e., the 2-step beats, Serj's manic vocals are almost a verbatim copy of Jello Biafra, the socio-political content of their lyrics, ... I'd almost call them a progressive derivitive of the classic SO-CAL Hardcore scene.

I'd really say they were influenced musically by Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys (most obviously), Angry Samoans, The Germs, Fear, etc.

btw, Giant Squid 's male vox sometimes resemble SOAD 's , for ex on Metridium Field, ..... also reminisce to Arcturus ' LMI

well they sound way more hardcore than modern neurosis or isis

and yeah dead kennedys seems a big influence...but i geus sjello and co. was and is kinda a influenec on EVERYONE...fresh fruits for rotting vegetables was another life changing album

but serioulsy am i the only one who sees the obvious doom /sludge / stoner sound i bands like post-wrod as law neurosis or sisi or mono oe even cult of luna....

i thought post hardcor emeant converge or botch or ealry DEP and shit like that...that kinda took the feroicsiu hardcore angle and went batshit crazy with it...almost extreme metal crazy...whihc was diluted into audio atrocity like evry cool thing
