maudlin of the Well (the former incarnation of Kayo Dot) is reuniting to release a new album featuring unreleased material and various fragments of music from 1998-2000 that will be completed and performed within the musical idiom of the original band. Each of the band's former members (Toby Driver, Greg Massi, Jason Byron, Josh Seipp-Williams, Sam Gutterman, Nick Kyte, and Terran Olson) has agreed to participate in the project.

Here's where the weird stuff comes in: the album will be completely fan-funded and released for free onto the internet. So far, the band has accrued enough funds to produce a full-length record. Further funds will be used to hire session musicians to increase instrumental variety and to press copies of the material.

Cool. MotW is a band I never really got into (I mostly liked their interludes rather than complete songs)... but then I heard kayo dot, who were far better to me. Anyhow, this is cool news, especially that they do an Einstürzende Neubauten with fan funding. And if it's free of charge I'll definitely pick it up, haha.

I only recently got into this band, and boy, I obviously missed a lot. Some of the more classical parts sound like some of my own music, jazz fusion, Zappa, etc. After listening to this, I was forced to try to find more, along with the Kayo Dot stuff, too.

Very talented and interesting band(s), pushing the limits, yet still very listenable and enjoyable.

No, but apparently Greg Massi, a guitarist, made some contribution on the Ehnahre album.

Just so you know, Kayo Dot's stuff gets quite different from motW. Choirs of the Eye bears some resemblance to parts of motW, with a different compositional flow, but Blue Lambency Downard and Dowsing Anemone in Copper Tongue, are sonically very different. In both cases, Toby tried to idealize the group's sound for live performance rather than the studio, and so both feel somewhat stripped down compared to the earlier work. In both cases, the techniques and sounds of metal are just one corner of a broad compositional palette, which is why so many metalheads (see the Metal Archives reviews) hate Kayo Dot and still like motW...

I really like both - I like how Toby uses a "classical" approach to both bands. It really gives depth to the overall sound. He's a really talented guy.

What a great album this is, perhaps the band's best.

Part the Second breathes Pink Floyd and Anathema entwined with MotW's own distinctive sound, highly recommendable!

Yet, do listen to Rose Quarts turning to Glass at 5:19 (when the vocals kick in). It sounds so much like Pink Floyd...
