I'm not such a big fan of "noise" - more doom-drone (which is still pretty "noisy") -

I just recently got into Nadja - very Sunn O))) influenced, but with a bit of melody and less "bowel-shaking".

And Sunn O)))'s "Pentemple" still really does it for me, especially with the addition of Sin Nanna's drums. (This album was a VERY big influence on my recent "Ugotllathath" album - after listening to "Pentemple", the album just "flew" together very quickly)

Hey Dimaension X - I got to say I also love Nadja! The band is often in town (Montreal) taking it off live, and I must say Aidan Baker is a very talented guitarist. What he does get out of his instrument is out of my mind, to say the least! Its ambient, 300% textured, but also fucking massive doom-like, something like 20 pedals around, all sorts of looping decives, wires... I was thinking about featuring him on here a few months ago, maybe I should! He's certainly "toying" with metal.

Go for Nadja Olivier, it would be great to start presenting all the obscure doomers and droners a bit!

Yeah he sure is... And a very nice, sedate, calm kind of guy. Whenever I see him, I always wonder if he just smoked a joint or something. He will be releasing a collaboration cd with Tim Hecker (!) on Alien8 Recordings in October, and according to Gary Worsley, "it's amazing" hehe. I mean for me Hecker is definitely up there when it comes to ambient/noise.

Definitelly. One of the most influental ambientist in history, Chimeras propably one of the best ambient songs I´ve ever heard. Also with listening Hecker together with R.Rich I was ´learning´ to listen to the ambient music.

offtopic: R.I.P. Hector Zazou, who died on 8th of September.

I like noise. Listening to music without any real structure is very relaxing and inspiring.

Recommendation for those who don't know him yet: Dissecting Table. His older work is industrial/noise/'metal', while the newer stuff seems to be pure noise (I haven't heard that much of his albums to be sure, yet). Rancid Smell is as beautiful as noise can be. And also Content Nullity, the project of guy I know from Litany (the official Skinny Puppy forum). He's very young and very talented.

Most of power electronics bore me, just isn't very interesting musically. Few exceptions: Whitehouse (too bad there won't be any new album, Racket was amazing), Haus Arafna (pop power electronics? catchy as hell), Nod (released on CMI, great atmospheric stuff), etc.

And to add my point of view to the music X not music debate: To me, every song/album is like a painting. The painter has colors and it's up to him what he'll use them for. He can paint something concrete or completely abstract. It's the same with music, just swap the colors with sounds.

Yeah, and who is to say that an abstract painting is not a painting? That would be absurd. Just like saying noise is not music. Your analogy is good to me.

I have to disagree with the analogy. An abstract painting is more like experimental or avant-garde music. Pure noise is like splattering paint on a canvas. You could still call it a painting, but you have to have some balls to call it art. Pure noise is the same way. Yes, it's recorded sound, but that doesn't make it music.

Now granted, most of the stuff listed in this thread isn't really pure noise, it has some musical value. But the stuff that's just a collection of sounds? It's just that--a collection of sounds, not music.

YOU say that man, but the music doesn't, nor do I. Sorry but its as I said earlier on, I don't enjoy people trying to claim that this is not music. I think its really ridiculous. I don't know what else to say.
