I agree, it had some memorable moments (I mean that I almost remember one riff) but overall it was quite boring to me. Plus, the vocalist has indeed a metalcore voice, and in a band like Cryptopsy it makes me suspicious.

I must confess that I laughed my ass off in a pair of forums reading those bastards' reactions on the album... but sure it's a shame. Cryptopsy don't really deserve that...
The album is just bad, but it could have been done by any other band on the world. The fact is, being the most objective that I can be (and today I still consider myself a big fan of Cryptopsy up to ...And then...), the album is uninspired, kitsch, plain brutal death metal with some new elements that just don't fit too much to me. The clean vocals (remind me of James LaBrie hahahah), are just too soft for the band and feel like put by force, the same as almost all the keys and slow melodic parts. The solos and riffs are clearly not as good as before (the main guitarist had gone before). Even drums are more plain than before, I find the whole album uninspired, maybe the next will be better.
As for Once was not, the vocals and production also ruined it for me... although it had a darker feel but I didn't fully like it. My fave is Whisper Supremacy (sometimes it is ...And then you'll beg, which to me is somehow avantgarde, of course), and Mike DiSalvo seriously kicks ass over Lord Worm, now and ever. By the way, the live guy was not bad too - I don't remember his name atm.
Back on The Unspoken, one day I must listen to it again, when I have forgotten all the 'Failtopsy' thing, but I think Once was not is first on the list of Cryptopsy albums to really dig... nah... I feel too lazy to listen to both, hahaha. Maybe some day...

I guess it comes down to the guitarist who wrote just about everything who left after writing/recording Once Was Not. I mean, would Iron Maiden survive without Steve Harris? Sure, the guitarist can write songs, but for a whole album? Hardly.

That's actually what I said... but adding that he already did write a bit worse than before on Once was not (to my liking at least).

haha, I read like a blind horse sometimes, especially during morning hours.
well I wouldn't agree with you on OWN, but that's irrelevant... I suppose we'll see where they go from here. still haven't heard the whole new album anyway.

Just saw them yesterday. They really kicked asses, they did an amazing performace. I don't remember the new songs they played, because I listened to the new album only once (and I didn't like it), but all the old songs are fucking killers.
All the members in there are real beasts, nothing more to say about Flo Mounier (everyone knows him) but also the new guys impressed me a lot, especially the vocalist (he impressed me more on stage than on the new album).
Anyway, I'm very glad to have seen them

There seem to be so many bands out there that can't seem to make a decent album anymore (metallica, cryptopsy, the new "Guns 'N Roses", and a few others), yet they still put on amazing killer shows. At some point in time maybe they should just stick to performing the old classics. I know artists want to continue creating new things, but some just can't seem to come up with anything new and interesting.

I think the album would have been much more popular if there hadn´t been that Cryptopsy-logo on it.
